Just a reminder that one should never get into a debate with an overly emotional person

Had to relearn the lesson with my older brother who is a massive leftist and attempts to steer the majority of conversations we have as a family into a political debate. He'll get his arse kicked in said debate and then start throwing a fit and behaving like a child hurling personal insults and then the night is ruined.

Remember, OT, as a rule, it's best to not engage in these types of conversation with them.

You can't debate with the insane; it just enhances their mental disease. I have learned this, so now I just let them ramble and not take the bait. It has made my life much more enjoyable.

I disagree. These people need to be humiliated and shown that the vast majority of people don’t believe as they believe. They need to know that their echo chamber isn’t reality.

My brother is the same.
Refused to have me over for Christmas because I’m not vaxxed.
Really tore me up don’t you know.

You just described what it’s like to debate 95% of the population, no matter which side of politics they are on. The average person has neither the information nor the foundation in formal logic to have anything other than an emotional tirade in which they regurgitate what they have heard other people say.

Oh I tend to agree as well. But it has a tendency to ruin somebody's Christmas.

Some of my family members are on the far left side, whereas the rest of us are on the right. We know not to talk about politics at family gatherings, and people will shut it down with a quickness and change the subject if any conversation starts turning political. Leave your shite slinging to Facebook and Tigerdroppings and don't ruin your few times a year that the whole family gets together.

Why did you let your brother get so lost? I would beat my brothers arse if he thought like that and wasn’t on my side politically. And he is.

So does this "logic" make Lesbians debatable?

Though I'd rather be like Beth Dutton at the dinner table and just converse savagely with my siblings, I only keep my political debates at bay for the sake of my parents.

Yeah, until the leftist goes and tattles on you to mom and dad who then get onto you for not knowing better than to engage in the debate in the first place. Kinda bullshite really if you ask me, I wasn't the one that got all offended by his beliefs, I wasn't the one that started yelling, I wasn't the one that threw the temper tantrum as a 30 year old.

You’re upset that your 30 year old sibling “tattled” to your Mom?

Sounds like the whole bunch of y’all need some lessons in emotional regulation as an adult.

Literally every single liberal argues this way because they know they don’t have facts on their side and can’t handle it when facts are thrown into any debate. They short circuit and go haywire.

It’s not 95%. That’s just what Twitter wants you to believe.

Debate/critical reasoning should be a required course in school along with the study of the hierarchy of scientific evidence.

"Debating" people on the internet is mostly a lost cause because it generally leads to logical fallacies or their inability to properly support their claim. I'm sure if you visit facebook, r/politics or the poli board this very minute you will find a whole lot of poor examples of debate.

My parents are overly emotional, conspiracy type right wings. The rest of the fam ranges from moderate right to pretty far left, we just all agree not to talk politics when we get together. Everyone gets along great and we have a good time. Unless that one cousin shows up who can’t follow the rules.
