Scientists have made an astonishing discovery along this part of the coast of northeast England: a 326 million-year-old fossil, showing traces of the largest millipede ever discovered. It's estimated to have been some 2.7 meters (nearly 9 feet) long – so we're talking about the length of a car.

Arthropleura animals lived around the equator for approximately 45 million years, going extinct during the Permian (299-252 million years ago). The reason for that extinction isn't clear – it may have in part been due to the rise in reptiles who eventually outcompeted them – but we're kind of glad they're not still crawling around the place.

That’s almost as big as the millipede in my pants.

I would much rather millipedes that size than centipedes.

I'd tame it and ride it to victory over my enemies

So a Smart Car? Most cars are way larger than 9’.

The wife wants to burn the house down if a lizard manages to wander into the house for her to find......imagine the fun and games finding one of those.

There was a dead one on our porch that was 6 inches long. So glad it was dead. I was ready to get the firearms out. I'd rather see a bear than a large arthropod, arachnid, or insect.

This is what happens when you have more carbon in the atmosphere.

So true man. Those gigantic ocean crabs you see at an aquarium make me think that anytime I see them.
Same thing if I ever watch King Kong when all those frickers come out at the bottom of that canyon. Yikes.

Was a lot warmer back then. Big T = Big millipedes

There was also a higher oxygen concentration in the atmosphere if I remember correctly, which helped contribute to the large size of many animals back then.
