DYK than an 11 year old boy almost died in NFL halftime show gone awry?

Video of the event
I can’t help but laugh at how the old time video just passes over the event like it was nothing and moves on the the result of the game.

His parent’s owned a hot air balloon and were there to take part in the show that was going to promote the upcoming St. Paul Winter Carnival.
“They were going to launch a hot air balloon on a 200-foot tether, take it up and with somebody in it, take it down the length of the field and pull it back down,” said Bob Jasperson of Wings of the North Air Museum in Eden Prairie.
That was the plan anyway. But when the balloon didn’t lift off the frozen Met Stadium field with Snyder’s mom inside the basket, she soon jumped out — and her 11-year-old son jumped in.

the rope connected to it somehow failed

Unfortunately, the 11-year-old’s troubles were only just beginning. Not only was he flying into the path of the oncoming air traffic at MSP Airport, but he would disappear into the clouds. The Federal Aviation Administration took immediate action to close all air traffic while Snyder’s wayward balloon proceeded to the southeast.

That’s when the basket tipped, catapulting Snyder into the river. Without his weight, the balloon then flew away unpiloted.
Snyder remembers the river landing. “It was filled with slush, so I was swimming through slush,” he said.

“Ricky was cool and collected. He guided the balloon to a splashdown in the Minnesota River…and Ricky swam 25 yards to shore, where an unidentified motorist picked him up and took him back to the stadium, where one of the Vikings doctors checked him out and said, “He’s OK.”

Was it the Sugar Bowl where that chick kissed the concrete because she supposedly lied about her weight for a halftime bungee jump?

Years back we had Saints season tickets about 12 rows back around the 15 yard line. Right where the cheerleaders stood. They were doing some type of pyramid thing and the girl on top did the fall back thing where they catch her. But the people to catch her weren't there. I was a kid but I distinctly remember the sound of her hitting the concrete. The team docs and EMS were out there working on her and they didn't even stop play. She got carted off on that flatbed they use for the players.

Ironically, the Vikings would go on to play the Chiefs in Super Bowl IV at Tulane Stadium. That was when the Vikings hot air balloon crashed into the stands before the game.

I had never heard about that. Can’t believe there were no fatalities.

I was at that game, My sister was in the halftime show, wearing a hoopskirt on a river-boat-looking float. It was cold and rainy and they drove this float halfway across the field before they noticed the damage it was doing to the field and stopped. Check out the field in the second-half highlights sometime.
I was also at the Saints game when the cannon when off and took that guys hand with it.

Remember last year, the Weeknd was almost abandoned in this series of golden corridors. Who would have known NFL halftimes were filled with so much near-death..?

That looked fun. Football is an outdoor sport.

My father n law was at that game He had Viking season tickets for 40+ years. He has his seats from Metropolitan Stadium, which are basically not much more than folding chairs, and his seats from the Metrodome. I'll see him next week.
