Instead of NIL, wouldn't it just have been easier to pay college players fixed salaries?

Pay more to starting players and less to backup and other players in the depth chart. Make it uniform across conferences, or maybe Power 5 conferences get a bigger salary cap compared to the Group of 5 and independent schools. I think that would have been much better than the NIL and the transfer portal and all the other mess we have currently.

Will never happen. because they would have to pay a Heisman candidate the same as the 3rd string goalie on the soccer team because of title 9.

No, that's the point.
Johnny Manziel was the crux for this. That man made A&M and millions and he couldn't and didn't benefit or get a penny...at least legally.
That is where this all started. So, you have super stars who the college and NCAA were making million off of and they were no better off than the 5th string water boy.
So now that college is effectively the minor league for the NFL, an athelete's status/name/production can now be used by a company for using their likeness.
What you are talking about, every single player for every school for every single sport that is on the roster, regardless of talent they bring to the table, would have to get paid, the same amount......that is equality.

And they already got a stipend along with room and board and meals.
No way any small universities could afford to pay 50k to every athlete on top of the scholarships.

This is not what we want.. NIL is the best option. However, it needs some work. Let the market play out.

I like the salary idea better. Small monthly amount and bank the rest each year while they are on the team, and they get it when their college career is over ( unless kicked off the team ) Applies only to revenue generating sports. NCAA, the conferences, and NFL (since colleges are the farm system) can all chip in. Keep the players focused on making their team better to generate more revenue, not on finding agents to do ads for car dealers, etc.

Now do every single athlete on campus, and not just the ones on scholarship. Also $50,000 isn’t enough for star players. Schools would still be paying under the table for better players

Nil was done to undermine the sec.
The non sec schools in big markets now have something to sell the best athletes.
Also, just because a kid can make money legally does not stop kids from getting money illegally. Boosters will still pay kids under the table…

On the positive side, the NCAA series of games should be coming out. I haven’t played any type of video game, since that was shelved years ago, I’m ready to play my sons, to see if I can still hang.

Pay them all the same as they sign. $3000 per month is plenty. Every athlete who must adhere to the NCAA rules gets $3k. Then allow them to be paid every time they represent the university other than on the field of play. All reported payments should be transparent and the random audits of tax info each school can do will assure there is no “funny” money

NIL is the players ability to make money off of their own name, image, and likeness.
This is not controlled by the school or the NCAA in any way except controlling the manner of involvement the school/boosters have.
Part of that is requiring the player actually provides some value to the person/business using the NIL. So a commercial or their name or likeness on flyers, etc.

Title ix plus that wouldn't really solve anything. They would all get their base salary above the table and their bonuses below it.

Wouldn't it be great is the NIL was subtracted from their scholarship, thus saving the taxpayers a ton of money.
