Terrible, as are NIL and the unlimited number of coaches rebranded as "analysts."

Not terribly sure anyone could ever convince me that it's a good thing the way it's currently constructed. I don't mind the idea of player movement, especially when coaches do it all the time, but they shouldn't be allowed to enter the portal the Sunday after being benched.

They should eliminate the Early Signing period and make the day after the NCG to NSD the window for Transfer Portal. You want to move? Fine, but you have to finish the season and once you're there you have to stay until next January.

They are taking up scholarships and not all of these guys go pro. Seems like chasing nil money instead of a degree isn’t what this should be about.

Yeah the portal is a good concept but just needs some fine tuning. All that the portal is, is a way for coaches to contact players who want to transfer without tampering. In that limited role, the portal isn't some terrible thing.

The free transfer rule is what people are really freaking out about. But even then, you only get one of those (and it works 2 ways).

A lot of this is that it's different and CFB fans have a static way of viewing things often. In this instance, it's largely based around the recruiting perspective (and recruiting is much more gross than the portal). They follow these kids like lapdogs and see them as "my guys". They don't want to lose them and then possibly get some guys from the portal who they didn't follow during recruiting. Mentally they are biased and devalue those kids automatically.

THIS. Coaches/assistants depart annually, those who recruited the players and built a relationship with them AND their families. Kids should be afforded the same opportunity ONCE during their college years. Obviously it makes retention and recruiting even more difficult, and in some cases facilitates the rich getting richer with their ability to cherry-pick an impact addition. Heck WE should be doing it, and I expect it, this cycle on the OL and at EVERY level of the DEF.

Of course it’s bad for college football that we are used to, but still I think the kids have the right to play where they want, even though it sucks.

It’s bad if you have NIL. You can’t have both and not expect CFB to turn into a semi pro league.

The coaches invest years recruiting these kids only to see them get plucked away due to street agents and greedy family members chirping in their ears.

Excellent for the players

They can find playing time where instead of sitting the bench

Just ask Jalen hurts how it worked for him

As for the teams, it’s a mixed blessing. Win some and lose some.
In 2019, it worked out quite well for us. Got us a natty with Burrow

Now though, we’ve lost 2 qb’s in 8 months. time will tell how that pans out.

Agree that free markets are good and that kids should never be locked in to non-optimal situations.

That said, whether it is scholarship, athletic investment or even NIL, there should be some level of commitment that is enforced. I say that loosely because I can start a job and quit right after onboarding as many times as I want.

IDK.. Maybe substantial NIL bonuses paid out incrementally?

College football is like Triple-A baseball. They don't play to win for the town they play in and they're all looking to move onward and upward.

The 2018 and 2021 ability and reasons for transferring are nowhere near the same

Ability, sure, but the grad transfer is very new in terms of CFB so that's not really an argument.

Reasons? Exactly the same. He didn't get awarded the starting job so he quit.

If these athletes want to start their careers make them employees and use salary caps and profit sharing to stabilize the product. Otherwise the system will eventually implode.

Horrible. When you get a guy who is a sophomore and the starting QB, but still transfers, that system is broken.

if by the "system" you mean the NCAA and NIL, then you are correct

It's terrible as the rules sit now. I think some of the rules that coaches were able to dictate where guys could go or them being able to deny their release was bullshite but the part where they had to sit out a year should still apply. This creates roster management nightmares now, hence the rule of being able to add 7 transfer portal spots. As bad as this may get, I don't know if 7 will be enough with players jumping ship from every program.
