Decision on new truck battery?

Do you guys just wait to be stranded? How do you decide when to get one? When you do, how do you choose? I have a 31 AGM laying around, but research suggests this is a difficult option for my truck.

When the battery warranty is about to expire, I kill the battery and bring it in for a replacement

When I start getting nervous about it. I've had batteries last as long as 6 years in a truck and as little as 1. I dont think there's really any science to it that normal people have the tools for.

The cheapest one in the biggest size that will fit.

the very first time it acts weak when starting the car/truck
its not worth getting stranded trying to get another few months from a weak battery

As soon as any signal of a weak battery appears I usually charge it, test it, and then get serious and replace it.
It’s also good to have one of these in your main driver as well.

Yep. There’s usually a weak startup to warn you that the battery is on its way out.

When I start to get nervous about it being weak. Walmart AGM last time. I've spent too much time and money trying to pick the correct batteries for my boat/truck etc. They all seem to suck. Also have the noco jump starter.

When it hesitates.
Nissan batteries at dealer are the cheapest I have found besides costco interstate.
I have interstates in most. Nissans in the daily drivers.
Energizer in sidebysides.
Zero preference really. The nissan ones I could get warrantied easier when travelling cross country.

Put a higher draw device on it. That'll run it down. Then a low draw led to kill it.
Unless charging in parallel with a good battery... It'll be screwed.

It seems like every winter the first cold day of the winter when my battery has been 3-5yrs old it will just sound like it drags somewhat when I crank it.
When I hear that “slow” crank I change it.

I keep a portable jump start pack on me at all times. Once my battery becomes very weak, then i replace it. Also, annual maintenance on your lead/acid battery is important.

Just had a battery replaced at Toyota dealership. The service writer said it would be a Toyota battery, they installed an Interstate.
Does Costco install batteries or do you just pick them up?

When battery shows sign of weakness I replace.
I choose the highest CCA battery that will fit my truck. Warranty also factors in. I went to NAPA a few yrs back since interstate cut their warranty way down.

I bought a battery from Costco for one of my cars and the lady at the counter said that there is a 3 year warranty and to mark my calendar to bring it back before the 3 years are up. Costco will give another brand new battery with another 3 year warranty. I asked her what if nothing is wrong with it and she said it didn’t matter. Just make sure that I bring it back within 3 years. She told the people behind me the exact same thing.
No clue what happens after the next 3 year warranty.

Well I appreciate you asking. I usually change it when I notice the truck cranking more sluggishly.

Hard to beat EverStart Maxx at Wal-Mart; 3 years full replacement.
