A lecture series by Duke University researchers focuses on a racial framework to food issues, claiming elements such as food charity and farmer’s markets are part of "white supremacist" food culture. The lecture, broadcast online as a webinar and provided at a Washington State University summit, places race as the most prominent factor in issues of food scarcity and how society attempts to resolve it. Jennifer Zuckerman and Alison Conrad, both white, of the Duke University World Food Policy Center claim that "whiteness" has shaped every part of food culture, even labeling "good" and "bad" foods as an expression of racial power dynamics. Unlike other areas of racial discourse such as workplace dynamics or education which derive mainly from social science, food and nutrition can derive from a more strictly scientific foundation. Zuckerman and Conrad’s research is entirely based on a cultural framework and does not touch on any potential scientific understanding or interpretation of nutrition that might help discuss the topic.

quote:

Zuckerman defined "White Supremacy Culture" as the idea that white people and their ideas, thoughts, beliefs and actions are "inherently superior" to those of people of color. She insists that this has been "reproduced by all the institutions of our society." "Everyone in the United States is impacted by White Supremacy Culture," Zuckerman stated during the webinar. She insisted that it is an "adaptive" framework, creating the potential to shift what the "culture" includes as time passes.

quote:

They argue that food charity creates "narratives" that minority communities "can’t take care of themselves" and need help. Particularly, the "mobile produce market" is "white-led" and takes advantage of "majority BIPOC neighborhoods," creating greater dependence on "white-led institutions."

quote:

Even if you're not intentionally acting from a white supremacist standpoint, the system is white supremacy, and you have to learn how that whiteness impacts the work that you're doing," Conrad said. "There's a lot of these sort of nuances that I think we tend to ignore. And a lot of these things have to do with white supremacy and structural racism that's built into the system."

There literally is nothing that isn't the fault of white supremacists.

Why do I have a real job when I could just join the "____ is racist/white supremacist" grift?

White women who speak on behalf of black people are the true racists.

I can remember saying in my past, "Why don't black people just act more like white people? They'd get more done and not set themselves apart from everyone."

Instead, they've done everything they can to get white culture to act like black culture, going in the wrong direction. Sorry, but no thanks. I like being white.

Some cultures are superior to others. The British learned this 2,000 years ago.

Which is why, when we do finally decided to "divorce" we get to keep all the history and naming rights to "America."

They hate it here...they can create their own, new thing all on their own. But they do NOT get to destroy America.

I'm afraid that the mental illness problem is on such a large scale, there's going to be only one viable solution.

Imagine looking at a farmers market and thinking racism and white supremacy.

Move to fricking Zimbabwe. I’m sure they still blame “white supremacists” there for not telling the people who were killing them how to farm the land.

Apparently the farmers are white supremacists for selling produce they grew rather than items made out of heavily refined sugar, starch, and other low cost stuff that is bad for you.

30-plus years ago there were nuts like this, but the colleges and media would not publish this stuff out of fear of embarrassment and loss of credibility.

Sounds like the racist whites are pissed off that nonracist whites are trying to lend aid to minorities who are in need of aid.

creating greater dependence on "white-led institutions."

Majority-minority neighborhood has no national or major regional chain store locations -- racism (whites want minorities to do with less than what whites have)

Chain store opens said location -- racism (whites want minorities to be dependent on whites for basic needs)

Chain store closes said location after "repeated unplanned donations" -- racism (whites have insurance!)
