Is open range the best western of the past 25 years?

It's on the list, but I'd put it behind:

Old Henry
No Country for Old Men*
The Assassination of Jesse James
The Hateful 8
Bone Tomahawk
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Hostiles

*If you call that a western. Fair enough if not.

Only thing I remember from this movie was the shootout scene at the end and just how terrible of shots they were even at close range. Which I thought was very realistic.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was a shocker for me. Did not expect what I saw. Great, crazy movie.

3:10 to Yuma is somewhere in that conversation.

Is that the one where Duval says how "that little split tag" has such an effect on men?

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It had your typical flow of an old school western too.

I’d also throw Godless in there (Netflix miniseries). I didn’t expect it to be really good and it was.

The English on Amazon was also very good with Emily Blunt.

I’d really like Duvall to make one more good western before he dies

This. He's my favorite actor. Heck, it doesn't even have to be a western. He's demonstrated his range - from the Great Santini, to The Godfather movies, to his westerns, to Secondhand Lions to The Apostle to Tender Mercies. Granted, Lonesome Dove was probably his best role.

Very good movie with Costner and Duval starring in it.

The shootout sequence left something to be desired with Costner, at one time, firing off at least 30 shots from his two six shot pistols, but that is usually par for the course with westerns.

The producers can't count to 12 and realize it's time to reload.

I just love how that movie builds and builds to the final shootout and it doesn’t disappoint. Some of the best dialogue since Lonesome Dove.

On paper, Jeff Daniels is laughable as the heel. On screen, he's amazing.
