Apparently Venezuela will vote tomorrow on whether or not to invade their neighbor…

And Brazil is mobilizing….

On December 3, 2023, Venezuelans will go to the polls to authorize Nicolás Maduro’s government to invade neighboring Guyana. If the crisis seems to arise from the blue, it is only because Washington has not paid attention.
The roots of the current crisis are 15 years old. On September 10, 2008, Mario Silva, host of the La Hojilla program on Venezolana de Television, broadcast a videotape alleging that the “US Empire” was behind a secret plot to stage a coup d’état that would include aerial bombardment of the presidential palace. The next day, Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez claimed that Venezuela was the vanguard standing against a larger plot sponsored by the “US empire, Yankee lovers, and the opposition” and gave the American ambassador 72 hours to leave the country. He fit everything into the framework of the alleged plot. After the Obama administration placed mild sanctions on Venezuelan oil and gas, Chávez said it was the first step in a Pentagon plot to attack Venezuela.

XOM and others have a huge stake of oil off Guyana. Either: 1) they will try and intervene politically or 2) this will drive up the cost of crude
People will sanction Venezuelan crude again and who knows what this does to Guyana production.

Expect a result that makes Soviet elections seem on the up and up.

That's a farce. The decision has already been made.

Guyana is twice as big as Louisiana land-wise but only has 800 thousand people. Why so sparsely populated?

Venezuela has a woman running for president that would do the country a lot of good but it’s basically a dictatorship. Election will be rigged. Maduro is a real piece of shite.

So that’ll be war in Asia, Europe, and now South America.
If Ethiopa invades Eritrea that’ll be Africa, too.
Australia? What ya got?
Antarctica?
Thank God the adults are back in charge in DC.

This conflict actually goes back over 100 years. The border between the British colony and fledgling nation of Venezuela was never well defined. The border was disputed and sent to arbitration that carved a border favorable to the British. Venezuela protested the outcome, but no one gave a shite. They tried again to address it after WWII and during decolonization.
The reason this is happening now is Venezuela’s economy has collapsed. The government needs an external war to unite the disgruntled population, and annexing a bunch of lightly populated, oil rich territory would help the failed socialist government tremendously.
I think Venezuela is about to actually pick a fight with Brazil and the U.S. because Brazil has pledged to assist Guyana, and Exxon Mobil owns the rights to the oil in Guyana.
