Marine officer shows how to win friends and influence people

Marine veteran Ivan Snook set social media aflame on Sunday after posting that the U.S. military should stop allowing enlisted service members to become officers.
“Mustangs erode the esteem, legitimacy and distinct culture of the officer corps like merchants marrying into the aristocracy,” Snook posted on X. “Nevertheless, we are intent on lowering the standards and reducing military service to being ‘just a job’ asap.”
“Mustang” is slang for a U.S. military officer who commissioned after serving as an enlisted service member.
Judging from the reaction that Snook received when he posted his theory about mustangs on X, it’s fair to say that many other veterans — including longtime enlisted, officers and mustangs who have been both — disagree with him.
One retired Marine colonel posted that mustangs are respected within the Marine Corps because they’ve already proven themselves. Others posted that they served with great officers who were prior enlisted service members. And one user wrote that he would rather serve under a mustang or warrant officer than a military service academy graduate.

I watched the Angry Cops video on this earlier. The guy that put out the tweets seems completely out of touch and has no clue what a good officer would look like.

I laugh when I get military recruiting offers these days. I was seriously considering going reserves as an officer but would never consider with the direction our military is going. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way either.

That is a horse shite statement made by an elitist idiot. I served with tons of great officers. The standard was the standard and if you didn’t cut it you were processed out where you couldn’t negatively impact our Marines. It didn’t matter if your commissioning source was Mustang, a Service Academy Grad, NROTC or PLC. You either excelled or you didn’t lead Marines!

I'm not military, but I'd respect an officer even more if he were too poor to go to college, then got his degree while serving enlisted.

Sounds like some jarhead that spent his time oil-checking himself in the latrine.

Odd that a Marine officer would hold this position considering one of their most revered officers is the legendary Chesty Puller who was himself a Mustang.

I tried the reserves when I got out and couldn’t play toy soldier after being on active duty for +8 years. Plus I would not recommend serving in todays US military, active nor reserves!

it's not like getting a commission is some big, arduous deal. go to any college and get any degree you want(not for all jobs). the problems with the officer corps is that it's not hard enough to become one and there are too many of them.

The last time I saw a Marine with this stupid of a take it was Dakota Meyer.

Some of the best officers I worked for in the Navy were Mustangs. Most of the poor officers I worked for were not.

Nope, former Marine Corp Corporal.
He’s writing his thesis for his MA, he probably just wanted the attention and got it.
Within 6 months, He’ll be on a Panel of Military Experts on Fox, MSNBC, XiNN, et al.

There is a significantly degraded respect for the officer corps in general, but we officers are to blame for it, not enlisted troops.

An officer, out of touch? Ya don’t say!

I would also submit that these days, the majority of non-woke company grade officers are the ones being pulled from the enlisted ranks. Straight from college officers are much more likely to be poisoned already.

Meyer is full of shite about many things, including, I believe, his story about his MOH.
