Are Porsche Boxsters ghey?

So I'm in my midlife crisis. Got a boat. Motorcycle and the big D.
Now I want a little sporty convertible.
I hate Miatas and the corvettes I like are out of range.
I rode in a Boxster a few days ago and I lived the way it handled and sounded. I've always been a 911 fan, but I keep hearing the Boxster is more fun to drive with the mid engine.
I've never had a two seater car.
Seems like a good used one is pretty affordable too.
I also want a car I can tinker on. And it seems fun for that.
Other options would be a used SL. I used to want an 80s Lotus Esprit but the prices doubled in the last 4 years.

Go with the 911
Eta never mind. I see you want to tinker.

Maybe an S2000? I heard those are fun.

Where do you plan on driving it? Around nola?
Do they even have any legitimately good driving roads in south Louisiana?
What do you hate about the miata?
Perhaps others (obtuse, billjamin) will have differing opinions but in my experience the dirty little secret on sports cars is that they are meh at best bumping around in the suburbs/city and like 75% of the joy you get out of the car comes from owning a "cool" car. Not actually driving it.
The car mags and car reviewers are testing these cars on rented out tracks or highly curated road trips through the canyons. You will never feel what they are feeling or be able to even get to 3 10ths unless you specifically seek out a location that allows you to do it.

The 911 I can work on too. Just I was looking to spend 10-20k. A 911 996 cabrio 4 would double that.

I just wonder why you would want to tinker on any Porsche. What is your definition of tinker?

Boxsters are excellent cars, Caymans are better but you might want an open top. If you weren't used to working in the tight confines of appliances I would warn you about the tight engine bay that takes a while to access and close back up, it ain't just popping a hood.
Spend some time researching the eras and the pattern issues those eras have. I don't know them well enough to advise.
I am a dyed in the wool 911 guy but the Boxster/Cayman is a more nimble car and you can definitely feel the weight difference compared to the 911 of similar years. It is hard to find a car that has a better stock chassis from the same time period, they are simply a blast to drive but every one of them save the current GT4 RS could use more power BUT it is always more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow which is the reason roadsters of various types have been so popular for people that want a sporty car.

He is looking at 986s which will have the infamous IMS issue. Easily correctable, but I would just try to find one with that issue already addressed.
As for tinkering, I'm not sure just how easy that would be on a boxster/cayman. The engine isn't exactly accessible. Not like a 997 and earlier 911 where you can open the back lid and at least be able to see/touch the engine. In a boxster you have to remove a lot of stuff just to access the engine at all.

Get a Cayman instead of the boxster. PDK and sport Chrono options.

Worked with a guy that had one and had to tow it home from vacation twice. Hundreds of miles away.
350z or 370z have great engines and come in a convertible. Tons of parts available too.
BMW has the Z4. Could kick it old school and get something T-top

The guy is looking for a fun, midlife crisis sports car and you are suggesting he get something with only 2 pedals? lol.

I’d buy the best M2 they’d sell me instead.

Agreed, if it is in the 97-05 years I would want the IMS to already be addressed preferably with an aftermarket fix (not sure who makes the best ones for the 986). The cost to do a proper fix is a little steep for a budget Boxster but easier to swallow on a 996.
Someone mentioned an S2000 but the problem is finding an unmolested/driven hard example and they command big money for what they are, fan bois have made the S2000 a car that never depreciates.
