I don’t claim to speak for those that gave their life for this country, but I have a strong conviction that they would want us to enjoy Memorial Day as they would if they were here with us.

Grill like it’s the last time you’ll ever do it. Get out on the water. Drink cheap beer. Enjoy your kids, and just be Americans. Last but not least, save a drink for those that didn’t come home.

If that’s your home, I’m so impressed.

I’ll be working because my grandpa would’ve wanted me to make double time plus 10%.

It is not. It’s a generic picture of a POW/MIA table that military units set for those that didn’t make it home. Empty place setting, salt, lemon, and an inverted glass. Sometimes a bible is included.

I had to be in DC for work last week and the coming week so I caught the Marine Barracks Friday Evening Parade, then tonight I met up with two old friends that work at the Pentagon now and we at Old Ebbit Grille and remembered a friend, his dram of Scotch sat untouched. I plan to wander around The Mall tomorrow and probably have a good cry or two remembering thinking of familial warriors that never came home. I have never been in DC over Memorial Day; it is very different.

I did the PoW/MIA table at University for years.

Enjoy people that not only did bad things on your behalf, but doing routine crap like *anything involving a helicopter or a boat.*

Just surviving is dangerous AF.

Good luck. 3 Scots.

DC is depressing. There are some folks that care, and the rest of the city is wondering how they are getting appointed as undersecretary of mechanized infantry policy. There is a hell of a lot of the latter.

While I understand that war and politics are closely related, this post was really just intended for remembering those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country(most of which were depressingly young). Which is the intent of the holiday.

I’m happy to discuss the shortcomings of U.S. foreign policy elsewhere.

You know it’s crazy, I know several guys who died in service in places growing up we wouldn’t have been able to point to on a globe.

Back then, I never once worried about if any given day was my last. We simply kitted up, mounted up, and went to work.

Now that I’m older with a son repeating the “mistakes” of his father, his father’s father, and so on I worry about him every time I think about the job he has to do.

God bless those who have all. For those whom I had the honor of knowing (you know who you are) I love you guys and miss the sound of your voices and laughter.

Man did we laugh at times…

Avenue of Flags at Orange Grove Graceland Cemetery in Lake Charles. Each flag is a veteran's casket flag loaned to the organization for display on Memorial and Veterans Day. Each is numbered and cataloged with the deceased name, hometown, branch of service, rank and years of service. 1,085 casket flags along with every State flag and flags of our Country's past are displayed today with honors rendered.

Time for my yearly dissertation that today is not a "happy" day. It is a day of solemn rememberance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we enjoy. So don't wish a vet "happy" Memorial Day. Reach out, shake their hand and say "thank you." And if someone wishes you a happy day today, refer to this post and that it was written by a war vet. (OIF '03-'04)

Thank you to all of our veterans, and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we will forever be in your debt.

They made a fricking video game about one of my friend's death in Afghanistan. Literally the opening scene to medal of honor real life footage of the incident, captured via predator camera My buddy wasn't officer Chapman for the record.
