Job Ethics Question | Switching jobs & Leave

I have been offered a new position at the collegiate level coaching and teaching a few grad level classes. I currently coach my school's HS team and teach middle school so it is a great opportunity and move up. As a teacher, we are allotted 10 days per year for sick and personal use. I had accumulated about 50 days in my years here as it leads to early retirement if you save a bunch.
The collegiate position, however, is not in the same retirement so those days do not count for anything. I spoke to HR last week and they said the policy for my scenario is "use them or lose them." I asked if I could be paid out or come to any workable solution, but they said no. So, I have been liberal in my use of sick days since and used twice in the past week. My principal and now HR are hounding me on maintaining attendance. Legally, they have no leg to stand on, but I was wondering what others thought? Teachers have told me to ignore them because they cannot do anything, but I was wondering if I should take into account anything else? But basically, it is hard to motivate myself to work for free.
For eleven years, I had come to work sick, missed personal opportunities for trips with friends and family, etc. and now being hounded to not use them feels pretty shitty to me. However, in the same breath, they say they are very sad to see me go.

What’s the difference in pay?
If it’s a huge difference I would just have to swallow it

So, you get a new job opportunity and you're mad that the entity you're leaving isn't going to make your life easier?
yeh, okay
yeh, okay

Use them all. If you can, take a 50 day vacation.
And that’s not to stick it to your current job. It’s that you’ve earned those days. They are yours to do as you will

I get your side, but kinda sucks for the school too. What kind of education are these kids getting, if they have a substitute half the time?

My first thought is if the government offers "great benefits," then they need to deal with people using said benefits. I say use those days.

None. I get paid the exact same amount whether I go to work or use the days. That's how screwed up education. They would rather pay a substitute the work instead of having me.

I totally agree. I asked explicitly could I at least be given a cash out for those saved days...give me the rate of pay the sub would get and they said no.

No, I meant what’s the difference in pay in the college job versus your current job?

Seriously, tell your supervisor what you got going and ask him/his/her/she/it/they/them what are your legal options.

Honestly, this is why I would just eat the days. The kids will suffer with a substitute and that would hang over me forever.

It's about the same pay actually. However, teaching one class per semester of grad level >> public middle school teaching. Coaching college is a great opportunity.I cannot pass it up. I have a good setup here, but burning out and becoming bored. I need a change and a new challenge.

I left k12 on the admin side and had 20 days of vacation that were use/lose.
I had a month of leeway before the new job and wanted to leave the district on good terms since my kids still went there. I took half days every other day. My boss got that I wasn’t trying to screw the district, but they were happy for me to be screwed out of those days.
That being said, I also worked up to 6:30 pm in my last day to make sure that they were good to go before I left.

I totally understand where you're coming from, would just caution you about punishing the students because HR is being unreasonable...

If you're not in a testing subject then enjoy some time off and with family.
