Lightsource bp, the BP subsidiary that is building a giant solar farm in Pointe Coupee Parish, said it will start working soon on a $170 million facility in St. Landry Parish.
Construction of Prairie Ronde Solar will begin early this year, with commercial operations starting in late 2024, company officials said. The solar farm will be built between Opelousas and Ville Platte, near the community of Plaisance, off U.S. Highway 167.
Prairie Ronde is a 180-megawatt facility that will generate enough energy to power 30,700 homes annually, according to Lightsource bp. That’s about half the size of Oxbow Solar, the 346-megawatt plant Lightsource bp is building off Ventress Road in Pointe Coupee. Construction of that solar farm started about a year ago and is expected to start operations at the end of the year.

Bill Rodier, executive director of St. Landry Parish Economic Development, said the parish is looking at approving a second solar farm, one that would be built by NextEra Energy, the parent company of Florida Power & Light. Amazon has also announced plans for a 100-megawatt facility in the parish that would open sometime in 2024.

They're building one in south Calcasieu parish too. Hurricane country doesn't sound like the best place for these.

Oh good! More land rendered unusable for at least 25 years at taxpayer expense. So much for being the worlds breadbasket.

I wonder if they considered the construction costs for 155 mph wind engineering design?

That huge one in West Baton Rouge is only 50 megawatts. The one they are building up by New Roads must be taking up the entire island if it's going to be almost 350 megawatts.

I mean, it definitely would in Calcasieu Parish.
My most interesting takeaway from that article is Amazon building a facility in St. Landry Parish. 2 day shipping on Billy's Boudin coming soon to a Prime household near you.
ETA: yes, I realize it is a solar facility they are referring to.

You could use that same footprint size to construct a real power plant that would generate 10 times the MW capacity. Well, assuming there's a large enough water source nearby for cooling/overall generation resources.
That's not really my point though. What I'm trying to say is that solar and fricking windmills will never be able to power our grid reliably. It's fine for supplemental, but our democratic lawmakers continue to push the retard logic that we can go green and continue trucking on and further taxing the grid and powering it with temperamental sources.

Is it going to destroy an old rice field or a sugar cane field?

3000 acres is what I heard, but thats only a rumor. Its on Jumonville's property, so not quite the entire island.

Dude with physics PhD at Manhattan institute says there is not enough copper on the planet to do this switchover to green energy. Will have to find more much copper going forward than in all of history to come close. Not gonna happen.

I saw they are building a big Billy's Boudin store in Opelousas next door to the Lowe's at I-49/US-190. They could potentially end up being as ubiquitous in south Louisiana as Buc-ee's are in Texas or Sheetz in Pennsylvania.
I'm definitely a fan of the store's offerings. But also impressed at how their newer buildings are turning out. Definitely a step or two above a typical fuel/travel stop.

Member Bidens trillion dollar infrastructure plan? It was to build shite like this, not highways which we actually need

More concerning....that's a huge part of the False River watershed. I know there's a decommissioning plan in place for this thing, but I'm still concerned that it will leach stuff into the lake.

Not just that, but keeping the glass on these things clean with all the pollen, dirt, debris, etc. is going to be a gigantic pain.

These solar farms will literally make crawfish prices soar.

Did it ever occur to you or this guy that the climate change nuts don't intend on providing for every current living person? They've already expressed their desire for a much smaller population.
They have no intention of providing the current setup with all it needs nor replacing every gas car with an electric one. They want you priced out of buying a personal vehicle, and in most cases they simply want you dead.
They want us smashed into cities, living in tiny pods, and either using public transportation or subscription-based vehicle usage for when it's absolutely necessary.
