What's the future of social media? Any chance that crap goes away?

Old man yelling at the clouds here but I freaking hate social media. Especially tiktok.

I'm really hoping this is all reigned in or something is different (better) by the time my kids are into it.

I guess you could say tigerdroppings is social media, so I'm a hypocrite for despising it since I like this site.

But I would sacrifice this site if the term influencer went away forever.

I really believe social media addiction and the lies and stupid shite it spreads is as damaging to society as the opioid crisis. I don't worry about drugs for kids as much as stupid arse social media.

Don't be mad you can't build your followers and get that clout.

Short answer, no, social media is never going to go away.

Evolve, yes. More integration into daily life as tech evolves. But social media has made every human (with the ability to afford it) the capacity to communicate worldwide. Commerce now relies upon it. It'll get even more all encompassing as tech prices and internet availability both boom.

TD is proto social media. BBS, message boards, and chat rooms all predate social media and are the foundations of where we are now.

Especially tiktok.

I watched the AFC Championship game on TikTok last night. Otherwise it's usually scantily clad women or workout dudes. Much better than Facebook.

I'm not even that old, but I find it all so annoying.

Kids watching kids play videogames. Incels drooling over skanks. Retards buying stupid products because some dipshit endorses it on tiktok. Lies and conspiracies everywhere. Kids getting depressed because of bullshite bullying and not living up to some fake ideal. Lame arse dance and lypsynch shite.

It's not good for society.

Social Media isn't the problem, it's the Attention Economy we use to pay for Social Media that's the problem. If FaceBook/TikTok/Etc charged a monthly fee to users to be the place that you share things, we would be the customer rather than the product, and that would completely change how things work.

I say that not to excuse Social Media, but if whatever comes next still makes us and our attention the product, nothing will change. That's part of what Elon Musk is trying to do with Twitter. He's trying to change the economic model behind the service which will allow for a more user friendly experience.

Nuclear war with Russia would end it. You would suffer a horrible death though. Tough choice.

I do instagram very rarely and only for messaging, no tiktok or FB. I wish it would go away, but it probably won't.

Which is why facebook/meta is hemoraging money right now and Zuck pivoted to VR.

I saw a YT video that explained it really well, but he lost the main commodity that made him money: People. For the first time last year, FB actually lost users and it's because they're actually running out of living, breathing humans to advertise to. So, unless they can get every living being on the planet internet access, all of these "free" products that we use are going to tank sooner than later.

The drive to make everyone more prone to instant gratification is too strong for most humans to handle social media for their own benefit.

The normalization of uber trivial concerns.

If you aren't on it how can it bother you that much? I got tired of my facebook so I deleted it. Problem solved.

I saw a thread last complaining about woman talking about stillborns on their social media, but the only way they could've known about that is if they've read it.

Think your anger is misplaced. Maybe you're realizing what I did a while ago, that people are generally pretty annoying in general. Social media is just a way to hear from more annoying people than you normally would.

Social media is very democratic, which leads to dumbing down and the most ridiculous individuals rising to the top.

If we had a true democracy, this is what it would look like.

Have you heard of Meta? (Facebook parent company)

Not only is social media not going away, it’s how you’ll shop for groceries and other items in the future using AI and VR technology. You’ll shop for almost anything and never leave your couch.
Interacting with people is coming to an end.
