Amazing how boring game was pre Burrow even with Mathieu. I really really hope there is a season not just for entertainment but keep all the momentum that has been built with the new offense and to further establish LSU in pecking order.

Turnovers won that game. The offense was atrocious, I formation toss dives and the occasional long throw to a receiver double covered.

Yes horribly sloppy game and the 2011 team was supposed to be our best prior to this year. Amazing how focused O has this team, I think success may be more attributable to O then we give him. Redit so far due to Burrow’s and the rest of the team’s stellar play.

All you heard leading up to that game was Oregon speed, Oregon speed, then the game started. When our D-end ran their "fast" tailback down from behind the announcer about choked.

You wasn’t saying that with Mett QB. The issue was Lee was not very good.
If you have a good run game and can use play action, you can win a shite load of games if your QB is decent to good.

Some fans only watch the offense, and then only on passing plays.
To them, defense, special teams, inside running is unworthy of the sport.
Subtlety is not a strong point on this site, so no sense in mentioning field position, turnover ratios and other such nonsense.
Les should have been fired.
But he was not without his strong points.
Which is why he averaged nearly ten wins per season.

No disrespect OP, but watching that D was not boring. The greatest CFB D in this era.
And Honey Badger was simply magical. He gives me football smiles every time.

Historical reference . . . I was at that game and it was not boring in real time. Anticipation prior to that game had built hugely from the end of the 2010 season. It was a marquee game with stellar results for LSU. You’re a fool to compare that team (or any team) with the 2019 Tigers.

Well, other than that uknowwhat game, they would certainly be comparable to '19.
Much better D and STs. No need to mention offense.

Lee was really good that year. He should have never been pulled as a starter. Should have used Jefferson as the change of pace guy the rest of the season, and if he needed to finish a game like he did against Bama, so be it. I’m so glad 2019 came along because that 2011 team was the best that never was. I rank that team up there with the greatest teams ever but that black eye in the ship took all that away.

We got the same “best team ever” hype going into the title game. We only played 1 close game, at Bama. We throttled every other team and we had a schedule almost comparable to this year. 2 big time non-conference games, played Arkansas when they were #3 and ended up wrecking them. Destroyed Florida and UGA. Les was so proud he put 2nd nationally on their sec rings lol

I don't remember the specifics of the game except maybe Mathieu's strip TD. But I had the impression that game was awesome.
Maybe it's my inclination for defense, or maybe it was the watch party inside a friend's business with a seemingly endless supply of beer and duck stew.

Lee threw off his back foot so many times. Lucky to complete the passes he did. There was one screen play called, maybe to Ford, where he sensed pressure and threw it way too early. Wasn’t even close to taking a hit.

No the offensive scheme with Mettenberger was absolutely atrocious. Huge waste of his and the other skill players talent.

quote:Look, you can hate Les all you want, but when we went hurry-up no-huddle and ran the Toss Dive 3 or 4 times in a row, it was glorious. The defense knew the play, there was no time for fakes or misdirection. They knew exactly what was coming, and they had no fricking answer for it.

Ugh yea until he played the gumps. Les was a recruiter and that’s it. As a coach he he really was out of his league with no imagination or presence to see what he needed to do to be successful

The beautiful thing that year was the defense. If the tigers got up by two touchdowns it was over....hell,at ten points it was over.
Remember Vern Lundquist saying in a game once LSU went up by 17 and was getting the ball back....you knew it was toss dive, toss dive with a sweep mixed in there...."you know whay's coming, question is, can you stop it?" Ware,Hilliard, Ford and Magee. They wore you down.

True media kept hyping Oregon’s speed but anyone who saw a mediocre Auburn D shut them down a few months earlier knew if we had even competent QB play we were gonna win that game. Lee wasn’t even that good but presented enough of a threat to at least force them to respect the pass.
