What are the chances Maason Smith comes back next year?

That would be a huge keep

I don't believe he will return next year

If he is smart, he will return. He needs to show more to go high in the draft.

Depends on his motivation.
If he wants to be in an NFL rotation and draw a check a few years, he will come out. He's got the size and enough tools for someone to sign him in the middle rounds.
If he wants to be a dominant force and make some postseason lists for awards, and the chance to be a 1st rd pick... he needs to come back, because it ain't happening this year.
We tend to sign a lot of guys who are willing to cash in as soon as they can, whether they've ever lived up to their potential in college or not. Smith might accept that he just isn't "it", and take the sure thing.

Considering his injury history, returning would be the exact opposite of intelligence assuming he is a projected top 4 round pick.
If his dream is NFL, coming back to college for another year and risking a third major injury doesn't seem conducive to realizing that dream.

Unfortunately this is true, I see him leaving. But NIL could make him stay with current projections.

I would say right now, he's definitely coming back because he's having a down year. If in the next few games, if he begins to dominate opposing OL, then I think he would come out.
I also think, if he were projected to be a third or fourth round pick, that he could return to LSU and probably make more money than what the league is paying for 3/4 round picks.

For some players, their stock is as high as it is going to get. Not for Smith. He has plenty room to improve his resume. He is close to Mike Detillier and I would think that Mike would tell him this. I say he comes back.

He needs to come back.
He’s going undrafted if declares for the draft this year. He has been terrible.
We need to come to terms with the fact that he’s not the 5-star caliber player we were expecting.

Maason Smith = Al Woods
Subpar LSU 5-Star player but a long time pro.

Why would he not?
He hasn't proven YET that he is or could be that DOMINANT DL.
He would greatly benefit from more time in college by getting healthy, and getting reps.

He will be lucky to go 3rd round, I could see him fall to 4 or 5. I’ve seen LSU defensive linemen leave with out having those odds.

The NFL doesn't draft based on recruiting rankings. Why do people keep thinking he goes pro? He has been getting destroyed all year.

He is a mid round pick. If he’s smart he comes back.

The same reason people think the only reason to go pro early is if you're a high round draft projection.
There are too many factors for anyone to be able to judge what's smart for Maason and his family. Declaring and staying another year both offer paths for a prosperous NFL career and generational wealth and I don't agree with pretending that only one path can lead to success.

Why would he not?
Uncertainty with his position coach at LSU
Uncertainty with his DC at LSU
One year earlier to signing the second NFL contract which
Better coaching all around
Maybe he fears another injury while at LSU
The decision to declare is not ever just about where you're projected to go and what sort of potential your current team has for success next year

Being a frontrunner for something like the Outland Trophy vs being picked as a "project" DL has to monetarily significant.
