Hurd’s audition to be the closer went very well.

It was cool seeing how many players went straight to him to encourage him. He had a smile a mile wide. Happy for a kid who has been trying so hard.

Hurd is not going to be the closer. If he comes around he will be a guy who goes through lineups at least twice - either a starter or a long reliever.

We aren’t really looking for a “closer”

It’s an overrated role.

Just because a guy is pitching at the end of a game doesn’t mean they want him be the closer.

You really need him as a starter.

He is a starter and needs to do that for 5 innings

Skenes
Floyd
Coleman
are your regional starters

Hurd will be the guy on the mound to close out the last inning in Omaha.

Coleman isn’t starting in a regional. We are trying to stretch him but Little likely starts vs the 4 seed, then Skenes to put in the championship and Floyd to close

Coleman won’t be a starter this year unless we’re desperate in Omaha. He’ll be used in high leverage situations.

Depends on the team but definitely for this team. We're not built to win a bunch of close low scoring games. Closer is not going to be super important for us most of the time. However, there will be games where we'll need someone to come in and shut the door to close it out. It just won't be an every game type role.

Yep we are stretching him but I think it’s more high leverage and to get him ready for 2-3 shut down innings in Omaha.

Which is kinda what Guidry and Collins have become with Herring as our Friday closer.

This teams power plus our pitching lends it to being more of a group effort

It’s pretty rare for a college team to have the luxury of a designated closer.

I do not think there is enough time left to get Coleman’s arm conditioned to be a starter and I doubt we can expect more than 3 competitive innings in an outing out of him this year.

You do not want to get him hurt again or damage his confidence.

1st outing : 16 pitches
2nd outing: 29 pitches
3rd outing: 41 pitches

I don’t know where they settle but it’s trending up

Hopefully he continues to progress towards a Day 2 starter.

I think it might depend on Floyd/Little/Hurd

Do we try to push Coleman closer to starting if 2 of them can’t lock down the starting spots or do we just push to get multiple games out of him in a series

I get the feeling that this team won’t have a traditional closer. CJJ plays the game as it comes and will use pitchers by situation. Thankfully, we have arms that are stepping up right when you need them to.

Doubt it. Would be nice if he can fill a starting role either day 2 or day 3. The more pitchers we have cemented as starters on the mound, the harder this team is going to be to beat for anyone. Hurd has ace stuff so him putting it together is encouraging. If you have a Skenes/Hurd combo watch out. Maybe it will get to that point maybe it won't but as long as he continues to get back to his old form it's only going to make us that much better. Coleman has steadily got better too which is another good sign. He struck out the black dude who is shelling the ball this weekend.

my thoughts exactly. Everyone is so obsessed with labeling one guy as the closer. the way i see it, who cares if we have the same closer every night as long as we have guys who can come in as a stop piece and not blow leads

define "desparate in Omaha." at that point you are playing for the whole enchilada and every team is desparate.
