I was very critical (obviously not alone here) of the job McMahon did last year, not only during the summer but in season. To make a long story short I felt like he was really trying to force a square peg into a round hole with the type of skillsets he had on his roster vs the system he was running. He brought the same offense he ran at Murray St and implemented it with players who skill sets just weren't capable of executing it.

His pickups this offseason however, at least on paper, fit his system very well. I'll link a video below that I did sort of outlining what he's trying to do offensively, but to make another long story short he needs guards that can operate out of the PnR, wings that can shoot the ball, and bigs that can either roll to the rim or shoot the ball from deep.

He got his guard that can operate ball screens in Jalen Cook, he got a wing that can shoot in Jordan Wright (only 31% this year, but 43% and 35% the years prior), and he's got a big that can not only shoot it from deep, but can also operate out of the low and high post in Will Baker. Corey Chest is coming in from High School and fits that rim running skill set you're looking for as well.

Obviously more is needed, but it's a nice start, and you see this same pattern in the additional portal guys McMahon is looking at. Off Ball screens is a large part as well, think the Adam Miller role but think Joe Girard coming off those screens, for example. Girard fits the on ball screen skill set as well. BJ Mack fits the skill set profile you're looking at for your bigs. So on and so forth.

I'm not saying McMahon will magically lead this team to the Sweet Sixteen next season, but it's definitely a start and an improvement.

Here's that video:

Idk what the end product will look like but on paper there definitely should be much improvement in the shooting department

Getting more proven players relative to last season at least

His transfers thus far are all guys with experience and varying levels of production in sold conferences. That's encouraging. We won't know whether or not it is a "big improvement" until December or January.

The only way I'll get excited about MBB is if McMahon is fired

Yes the recent lock ups definitely get the bad taste out of your mouth. I think anyone should be given a few years unless there is a serious problem with the program. He came in with nothing. He is now settling down. He has been the LSU coach in name for longer and I am sure that has opened up new recruiting paths for him. Let’s Geaux tigers. Keep it up coach. We will get behind you very quick unless….
Nice to have a solid 7 footer on the team with experience.

As many know I’m close to the basketball program. They have a clear vision of what they want. He’s targeting the right guys and he’s felt good about how the sell has gone. I’m not giving up on him because I want good guys to have success. And above all he’s a really good dude. Gerard is key and they feel good about him being a Tiger

So if McMahon pulls together a team that makes the tournament this season and a deep run next you won't be excited? If so you are basically admitting you're not actually an LSU basketball fan.

Do I expect all that to happen, I don't think I do. Will I get excited if it does, I absolutely will. Any LSU fan would.

Solid pickups so far but like for any team will need to see how the pieces fit together on the court.

Could be a perfect fit and come together like K st, or could not fit together and don’t live up to expectations like Illinois

Dead last in the SEC is a serious problem with the program.

Glad to hear it. I was a little disappointed with how hard headed he seemed to be at times during the season, but glad to see he's walking down the right path.

McMahon has turned MBB into a time killer that exist between Football and Baseball seasons. More people will watch and attend WBB and gymnastics over MBB.

Blows my mind that you claim McMahon turned the program into this when it is very obvious Will Wade did this to the program.

I appreciate the basketball insight that you bring. I'm a casual basketball fan, and I have a good idea of the game, but not quite the X's and O's that some of you guys have.

Thanks man!

I agree as much as I dislike mcloser for last season it is nice to see some life. Hopefully the on paper fit works even though I think his system sucks balls.

He is still no better than 13th best coach in the league though which is a concern.
