Dan Mullen made great point about the 2 point conversion play.

Besides catching Saban off guard he said the LSU TE set forced Bama to respond into a heavy set to protect against the run. LSU was showing run with a heavy TE package but 5 threw it and the rest is history. Great chess move by Kelly.

I thought it was funny that Marcus Spears knew it was going to Mason as soon as he saw the set.

Thought the video of Marcus was pretty great!

It was easy to see coming. How many times did Drew Brees throw to Jimmy Graham using that play. Very hard to defend.

It seems when Saban panics and cannot match wits with the opposing coach on defense he simply goes to man coverage. It usually works because he has the talent on defense to make it work. But this rub route with a TE in motion that already has the forward momentum the defender couldn't catch up.
Because Saban called man coverage number 9 on bama had Mason Taylor.

Here number 9 is getting hung up in the wash. 9 and 7 on the bama defense should have switched coverage. Happy they did not.

It's over at this point. Mason has 2 steps on 9 from bama.

I'm glad Mason had 2 steps on 9 because JD threw the ball slightly behind Mason.

And he scores.

Pretty sure it was set up for Daniels to run it in if the CB went wide and covered the TE.

If you know football, you knew it was going to Mason as soon as you saw the set, let alone the yo yo motion. We had them when they went heavy to stop the run.
Mason is a matchup nightmare. It’s amazing how fast he has developed. This staff is light years ahead of any offensive coaching staff we have had in the last 35 years as far as developing / improving you players is concerned. We have 3 true freshman starting and playing at an extremely high level on offense. You rarely see any of the three look unprepared or make mental mistakes. Remarkable.

High risk, high reward. I appreciate his breakdown of the play so those of us who aren’t Xs and Os guys can appreciate the nuances of it.

Yes. The only way to defend it is for 9 and 7 to recognize, communicate and switch. That is asking a lot for a college defense.

And we run the ball a lot with the TE going in motion. So Bama still had to play run with Taylor going in motion.
Great play call in that situation.

And I cannot say enough about Jayden's decision making on that play. If he tucks and runs it he may not make it because 42 on bama was spying him and if one of the WRs or Mason does not make their blocks JD probably gets tackled behind the line. Incredible recognition by Jayden.

I remember on the 2 point play the stadium hollering for LSU to snap the ball because bama still had 12 guys on the field as one was running off.
Hindsight I’m glad we let him get off before snapping. Think the penalty yard wouldn’t have give us as much an advantage as bama seeing our play setup and trying to adjust

Watching some side views from the end zone, that play really shows how much JD still has to grow as a passer. If he anticipates and makes the throw right as Mason separates and begins his turn, it's an easy walk in.
Instead, he waits until Mason is fully turned, and then throws it a little off target. Mason did a hell of a job controlling his body, absorbing the contact and getting inside the pylon.

Because the safety who is guarding the TE in man coverage has to run through traffic to cover him. The routes the WR ran caused 9 to have to arc around the WR/DBs which allowed more time/spacing for Taylor.
