Retread former NFL coach (Carroll, Ryan, etc.)
Current NFL Head Coach for other teams (McCarthy)

There’s such wide difference in the candidates in each of your categories. Entirely dependent on the job, foster and front office situation to really make that call

I love how many great coordinators make bad head coaches. What makes you assume being a savant at one side of the ball translates to running a team. These are two very different skills

There have been successes and failures in every such category. It's a genuine crap shoot.

I mean that’s true to some level but what else is supposed to show those skills exactly?
Coordinating an offense or defense is a pretty logical prior step to coordinating an entire team and there’s more to coordinating than play calling.

Though I will say, his early Jets teams were bad arse. If he had a good QB, his career would be a lot different. His GM fricked things up in NY.

Just like QBs. Too many variables for a single pattern.
This applies to the progression in coaching prior to HC, too. Cohen left UK to go back to the LAR and couldn't hack it as OC, so he went back to UK for literally 1 year...then he goes to TB and is now seen as a guru. This is all within like 3-4 years.

The smartest guys don't always make the best coaches. The psychology of leadership is difficult for super high intelligence types. I think this even affected guys like Bill B early on, and he got better after failure and more time under Parcells (who is apex leadership personified).
When you can get one who has the organizational skill and leadership, you get a McVay. Absolute stud.
When you get one without the leadership, you get a Dennis Allen or Josh McDaniels.

If I’m an NFL owner, I hire a GM with a proven background and leave the coaching search up to him, and tell that GM to let the new coach bring in the assistants of their choosing.
I stay out of football operations and just sign the checks.

And 20+ teams would take any one of them over their current coach in HEARTBEAT. Don’t confuse a bad season with a bad coach.
Compile a list of the top 10 Coaches in the league currently. Find out what they all have in common. Rinse and repeat

#1. Do i have a future at QB? Assess other teams in my division at that position, along with how many picks, and position they are in.
