Would Napier be mentioned at all here if he was the App State head coach?

Obviously not.
So one of the only reasons he’s mentioned is because he’s coached 4 seasons at a Sunbelt school in La. It’s truly bizarre.
He may end up being a great P5 coach but people on here have him as their #1 above guys like Riley, or Rhule, or Campbell, or even someone like Aranda.
I am totally perplexed by this.

I'd be really surprised if that's who we end up hiring.

He’s one of us adjacent.

Is Chadwell being mentioned at all here?
There's your answer.

Chadwell gets brought up a little but pretty immediately dismissed.
But the Napier thing is really pervasive. And it’s solely because he’s a coach in La.

I actually don’t think that’s the question.
The question is, would he even be on the list if he wasn’t a WR coach at Alabama fit a few years (long after their dynasty was already established btw).
Some want so desperately to believe in the idea that he is “the next Saban”, that I don’t think it matters all that much that he’s “from LA”, no matter how much they say it.
If he was WR coach at Clemson or OSU those years instead of Alabama, and he had the exact same record at UL, I honestly don’t think he’s even in the discussion.

I have no problem with what Napier has done at ULL.
If he's the hire I won't be upset at all.
But with Napier you have a risk, the same as you do with Aranda and even Mel Tucker - which is that none of them have built multiple programs.
When a guy has only built once, you don't know for sure if it's not just a good group of players who are responsible for his success.
Call it the Curley Hallman factor. Hallman is actually the coach with the best pre-LSU record of all of our modern hires. But it had nothing to do with Curley - it was the fact he had Brett Favre, Michael Jackson and Tony Smith all at the same time playing Southern Miss' schedule.
I don't think any of those guys are Curley Hallmans. I'm comfortable with any of them. But on balance, you want to hire a guy who's built and won at least twice because then you know it isn't luck.

That’s not true. If he hasn’t coached at both Clemson & Alabama, he’d just be mark hudspeth. Who was never mentioned for the LSU job when Miles was on the hot seat, & he had four straight 9-4 seasons at ULL.

Would he be mentioned at Auburn, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, TCU?
Posted on 11/15/21 at 9:33 pm to Bjorn Cyborg
None of which except maybe Auburn are even remotely the job LSU is, he didn’t get any of them, and I’m not convinced he really was in actual consideration for any.
I think he may be a good coach. And it may work out when he does get a P5 job.
But the level of devotion he gets on here is weird.

Did Napier dump his wife and marry a student? Hudspeth did that at UNA.

He’s not my choice, but G5 coaches get top jobs often.
To act like it’s unheard of is absurd.

If App St was in the top 25 two years in a row and had upset several ranked teams then yes he’d be mentioned. Saying other wise is just silly.

A lot of auburn folks have debunked the story of him having the offer
I think Napier has stood pat for the shot at this job. Easier to market himself 45 minutes down the road and stay relevant in local headlines

I haven’t seen anyone that has had him over those guys you mentioned.

It’s not the people on here who happen to know about and like Napier as a coach who are putting him in the conversation.
He’s in the conversation because he’s a legitimate candidate. No one on this message board has anything to do with that.

If he beat drummed Iowa State and was like 30-5 the last 3 years sure
The only reason why ULL matters is because we’ve all spent our lives watching ULL suck.

G5 coaches get jobs at schools 2 years removed from winning the NC? When is the last time that's happened?
