re: Why was Chad Morris so bad at Arkansas?

Arkansas has the only OL worse than A&M's. And they have no talent in the pipeline to improve it. That was Morris biggest issue
And half of them quit. Before or during the season. Apparently he told them to lose an avg of 30 pounds or something.

He turned off most of the older players by saying they were doing stuff wrong in his opening statement. Then he repeated constantly it was a rebuild and they weren't good enough. Had to recruit his way out of it. Players now know coach has no belief in them. They haven't been around him enough to believe in him. One of his first objectives is to create a giant mural of him and deshawn Watson in Clemson gear on an Arkansas campus building. Players do not see any progress. They lose constantly. He was aloof, and unapproachable. Acted different in front of a camera than behind the scenes. Said one thing, and did another. Now they feel like not only does he not believe in them. He is also a fake. Which he was with fans, media, and his own players. Played favorites, and treated the team like a 5a highschool in texas.
This team never bought into him because of all of this. You have to earn your players respect. He never did that, and focused so much on recruiting (which he did a tremendous job at) that he never recruited the team.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it's not as if he took over a great SMU program. They were 1-11 the season before the got there. He gradually re-built the program.

Yes. From Bert's previous "fundamental change" in philosophy. Bert tried to bring Wisconsin style football to the SEC...which had much better athletes than the Big 10
quote:
Sure. If all you remember is the Bert led Arkansas program. Which had minimal success in its own right. Prior to Bert, Arkansas had some pretty prolific offenses under Petrino. Arkansas wasn't a "power run 70% of the time" team UNTIL Bert arrived.

Dabo was on the verge of being canned prior to hiring Morris. He finished 6-7 the year before. And it's not like Boyd was a superstar before Morris got there. In fact, he had reshirted and been the backup QB the two years before. Morris turned him into a prolific player (much the same way Brady has done with Burrow this season). And Dabo wasn't exactly setting the world on fire in recruiting prior to Morris's hire. I think most Clemson fans would tell you that without the hire of Morris, Dabo would have long been fired and Clemson wouldn't be where they are today. That move set the wheels in motion.
quote:
That's pretty important for Arkansas. They can't compete on in-state talent alone. They MUST recruit Texas well.
Now why he failed so miserably I don't know. Perhaps the drastic change from Bert's style to his style was simply just too much and the losing because of it caused the program to quit on him. But at the time the hire made some logical sense for Arkansas
all of this was spot on...
I still think he chose the wrong school to leave SMU for... if he would waited a year or two more i think he gets a better job... like florida st...

Cause his players sucked and they didn’t give him time to inject his own players into his system?
Posted on 12/5/19 at 12:03 pm to ColoradoAg
Reportedly they came in and told the OL they were too fat for his style and the needed to lose weight down to 270. A lot of the OL knew they were going to get their shite pushed in as a result and left/retired.

Hard to really know. Arky seems to hate every coach they have. I think if you hire a guy, he should get 4 years min.
That's just not true. We liked Bielema and Petrino, and Nutt for most of his time here. We were willing to give Chad a chance until it was obvious the team was not only not improving, but regressing.

Players he didn’t recruit weren’t buying what Chad was selling. It was pure cancer.

Petrino did really great things with Arky and they were nothing like the power run teams of Nutt and Bielema.
Still did so running a balanced pro style offense with the same run schemes and the same profile offensive lineman
That's like pointing out the year Wisconsin had Russell Wilson and saying their not always that run heavy

QB: Morris
RB: Morris
WR1: Morris
WR2: Morris
Slot: Morris
OL: 2/5 Morris
TE: Bielema
Looks like most of the players were his to me

Yeah, 18 months was enough time to find out.
When you are worse in month 18 than month 1, it is a very bad look.
Getting blown out by a G5 school at home with the QB you told to move on is a very bad look.

no improvement after what Burt left him. Yeah, 18 months was enough time to find out.
I'm not talking about wins and losses, Einstein. I'm talking about lining up in a legal formation. And even if I were talking about wins and losses, there are probably a few high school teams who could beat San Jose State in Arkansas, but not the Razorbacks as coached by Chad Morris.
But hey, if you're all into him, and y'all want rid of Gustav so bad, there you go! You can probably get him cheap, and he can work all his Morris wonders in the plains.

Thanks. You are proving my point.

At this point, its not the coach. Why is Arkansas so bad?

How exactly?

The fact that we spent 18 month getting worse instead of better with Morris as the coach, pretty much sticks your point up your arse. Apparently it can join your head there.
Honestly tell me you would be fine with a coach at Auburn with a record of 4-18, with losses to Colorado State, North Texas, Vanderbilt, San Jose State, and Western Kentucky, with absolutely no sign of improvement in any facet of the football team, or shut the hell up. It's just stupid.
Posted on 12/5/19 at 1:00 pm to saturncube21
Because he is a shite coach.
Posted on 12/5/19 at 1:06 pm to saturncube21
Because he's not a good coach. Even Clemson got better when he left. I was furious when OM was even considering him.

No reason to start now.
To answer your question, though, he was a bad coach with bad assistants. The players have dished a lot of dirt about him. The team hated him.
