Elko took a 3-9 Duke team and went 9-4 earning ACC coach of the year in his first season in Durham.

Saban’s salary when he hired him didn’t warrant it, that worked out fine

There are tons of guys that flamed out with Kirby’s resume when they got the job.

It’s an inexact science. Why do you care if we pay the guy $50 mil a year if he want?

He’s worth what the market dictates and we have two schools within our conference bidding for him. Do we move down a tier on our list over a few million or get the guy we want ?

He may or may not be the best coach available, but he is the best bet of all roll the dice hires to keep LSU consistently in the playoffs. Least risky hire, imho. Some may say that is lazy, but I say it's playing the odds. That's a smart play.

Great offensive mind. Great QB developer.. elite rushing concepts... Hungry for a natty. Always wanted another shot post UT and USC. Took a historically bad fau program w three straight 3-9 seasons to double digit wins two of three years. Took over a lifeless ole miss program to 50 wins in 5 years. So he's made history at the past two stops taking their football programs to heights never seen.

Fan base is at a tipping point point between disinterest due to the NIL era and a floundering Kelly for years.

The PR aspect of generating real buzz around this program is a factor as well.

Of the coaches available he’s pretty clearly the best/safest option.

He’s been successful in the SEC and he is elite at calling plays.

Is he a sure thing, of course not. Bit no one is.

This is true. Program needs a shot of excitement and energy.

Old men are going to be mad when he pulls out the fire extinguisher and basketball goals on the sideline.

He's similar to a guy at Michigan State a while back.

You clearly think it's not Kiffin, but won't speculate on who might be better or why Kiffin isn't

you suck, everyone boo this man

Because the best choice is retired and the next 10 are about the same.

What more do you fricking want?

Ideally, what I and most fans want is an excellent coach who is on the ascent and is paid well, but not excessive, wants to be at LSU, knows the landscape, RECRUITS AND works portal, has had success wherever, not been fired, and doesn’t bring drama. Additionally, if we’re to keep Baker then an offensive minded coach works but isn’t required since some of the greatest coaches are defensive minded.

Kiffin might be the best but there is zero proof in the pudding. No head coaching success really beyond what we’ve seen in a few seasons at Ole Miss.

When Kirby was hired at UGA, his salary was #23, not #1. He didn't get the massive contracts until after having won the natties.

Exactly

We’re hiring someone with zero resume credentials that warrant the salary beyond “the market” but as we’ve seen, or heard, it’s not about the money….

Best choice right now does not mean that he is the best choice for LSU's HC. I will still say Eric Morris or Dilly would do fantastic things here.

Ok, so NAME a coach or coaches that in your opinion fit the bill and validate the point of this thread. LSU football is in a pretty bad spot right now - and could be 1 more bad hire away from making the 90's a reality again.

So, name a coach......

Knowing how to work the portal is great but I hope he isn’t going to just rely on the portal to build his rosters.

Not having to rely on the portal as much to build his rosters is the MAIN reason he would take the LSU job if he does take it. He can build a better roster and without as much work. Imagine what he can do if he does the same amount of work. Or even better, if he can delegate a lot of that work, and spend more of his time perfecting his offense.

Just think of what he could do with an offensive roster made up of mainly guys he’s developed for 3 or 4 years. He’s having to simplify it now due to having so many 1 year portal guys. If he’s got 8-9 guys who have been running his offense for 3 years, and some of those are Odells, Chases, Jefferson’s, Nabers, Bouttes, Fournettes, and all he’s having to do is add 2-3 stud cherries to add to the top per year, his already great offenses could open up in a way he’s never seen before, because he hasn’t had as easy access to that high quality players before. Especially depth-wise.

So no, there’s zero chance he’ll continue to just rely on the portal at the same rate and neglect building his roster through the high school ranks. Otherwise, he’d just stay at Ole Miss. It’s THE very thing that makes the LSU job that much more attractive. If he’s winds up deeming it so and taking the job. Hell, even if he doesn’t. It’s why he’s even considering it in the 1st place. Why he hasn’t already signed the Ole Miss extension.

I agree. We have a unique opportunity for coaches with the talent pool and single in state flagship university. I expect he recruits like a beast here.

If coach O is on the team then I expect that will help us with recruiting since he’s known to be very active recruiter.

Bottom line for me-
With the amount of money reportedly being paid, we don’t want a guy that ignores the awesome high school talent right under his nose in favor of portal guys.
