Yep. Coaches do this all the time. I wouldn't use the word "quit" per say. Sometimes players and/or coaches just kind of lose focus because of the distraction.

I'm not saying that's 100% what's happening in this case, but if it is, it's not like it's the first time it's ever happened.

ETA: Herman has already told the media that he's had to have meetings with his players about it. That is what you call a distraction plain and simple.

really? I haven't seen those

personally I think the writing is on the wall, and that has it's effects on a locker room

LSU was winning the Iowa bowl game until the final play on an obvious blown holding call on Iowa. Houston got their arse kicked by SMU the whole game. I would not compare the two games.

SMU will not be in a bowl game this year. Whether the players at Houston have quit on Tom or Tom has quit on the players this is a bad sign for the coach.

I think he is a bright young coach. That being said, I'm sick of hearing about that chick fil a bowl win against an FSU team with a backup qb, that didn't wanna be there.

Anyone wonder if Ed Oliver will follow Herman wherever he goes?

How badly did UH suck without Herman?
They didn't. People act like Herman built that program. He didn't. Even the coach he took over for had a winning record. Tony Levine went 8-5, 8-5, 5-7. Before that Houston had Kevin Sumlin and Art Briles before him. Sumlin went 13-1 in his last season before aTm hired him. He didn't seem to allow all of the coaching changes talk affect his season, so Tom Herman doesn't get a mulligan for his.

All that "the players don't care anymore" and "he's distracted by job offers" is absolute bullshite. If by any chance it is true, I sure as hell don't want a coach that can't maintain focus and keep his players motivated enough to beat SMU. Hell, they didn't even come close to beating SMU!

seriously - there are better excuses than 'the coaches/players quit midseason' that they could have come up with that don't make Herman look like a terrible coach.

I think some people just get stuck on a name and can't let go. I suppose I'm guilty of it too with Jimbo Fisher. At least Fisher has a much longer and more successful resume than Herman though!

Herman is the best coach available, don't think he quit on the team but he is distracted. WHICH means less focused on small details.
I think the players see this and they too are distracted and making errors on the field which have resulted in sloppy plays. Watching them over the past couple of weeks they don't appear to be the same team as earlier this year.

With a coach like Herman those kids know he is leaving when before they thought he would stay.

If he has not signed on a dotted line there is no guarantee he is leaving.

I for one was glad when Nick Saban left LSU. Like sayonara MF'er. Thanks for what you did, don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out. "We hate to see you go, we hate to see you go, what the hell you waitin for, we hate to see you go."

Don't get me wrong, I liked Nick as a coach and damn sure appreciated what he did for the program while he was here. BUT, got damn I always wondered if the guy didn't hire a PR firm before he hired an agent. Every time a NFL coaching job came open, Nick's was one of the first names mentioned. Off season, during the season, didn't matter. Like WTF Nick is a PR firm doing this shite or are you personally writing letters to the teams and every media outlet in the US of A.

Even with Nick's NFL PR campaigns relentlessly churning speculation of which NFL job he would accept, LSU's football team still did pretty damn good the whole time he was here.

If I was coach of a team about to play Herman I would just start rumors about the guy the week before we played. Like his wife cheats on him, he is gay, his mother used to have sex for money or a multitude of others. If the guy can't handle rumors of him leaving and getting his team to play well, any other menial distraction would cause the same thing or worse. Death of family member, friend, etc.

Herman supporters, mainly UT and LSU fans, please explain how a coach quitting on his team is a positive..

It isn't at all and anyone with any common sense knows that. But the bigger question is; has the team quit on Herman because they know he is gone, or has Herman quit on the team because he knows he is gone?

My personal opinion is; the team has quit on Herman not Herman quitting on the team because of the exact reason you have pointed out. If Herman did quit on the team and got out how do you think Herman's potential suitors would feel about that?

According to the reports, He had the dolphins offer on the table for about 6 weeks and took too long to finally decide to take it. This is why we were left with miles as a choice since all the other coaches were off the table by that time.

It is, however, a common message that I see on this board so I thought it would be something worth discussing.

I'm one of those who has said it. It thought I was pretty clear that my message was sarcastic in nature. Can't speak for the others...

Or maybe with half a season down opponents are starting to figure out how to defend the RPO-centric offense Houston runs.
