Why has there been more negative reaction to Kelly leaving ND than Riley leaving OU?

From a national perspective mostly.
I get the that ND is still in the CFP mix(kinda), but so was OU until Saturday night. And unless you really believe Riley woke up Sunday morning with a Zoom link email from USC like he said, I don’t see what the difference is.
Notre Dame bias? Riley being perceived as a more likable guy? Help me out here.

Because it’s precious Notre Dame.
No one messes with the precious Notre Dame.

That Notre Dame can still make the playoff is a big part of it
That a lot of national media are from the northeast, they look at Notre Dame a certain way and don’t understand why someone would leave is the other part

Because they want so bad for USC to be relevant. They give two shits about OK.

Because Notre Dame is possibly in the playoff.

College football is changing. The SEC is pulling ahead of everyone else and everyone else doesn't like it.

Because the media hates LSU, this will hurt BAMA and theyre butthurt over it.

Brian Kelly is an easy target
LSU is an easy target
Notre Dame is a protected commodity
Add in the fact that they could very easily make the playoff and it’s a match made in heaven for the “WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR SPORT?!” hit pieces that have come out once every 6 months for the last 59 years

It’s a slight chance. But Riley was obviously openly negotiating with USC while his team had a very realistic chance of making it. That part seems to be forgotten.

They’re mad about Will Wade, now BK

The timing is different for the 2 teams.
If OU would have beat Ok St & he still chose to leave, then he would be getting the same negative reaction.

USC and Notre Dame both have significant numbers of media members who have great affection for the schools and say things like "college football is better when they are great".
There's also justifiable concern about money being overspent on the football arms race and SEC schools make a better metaphorical whipping boy. This even though it looks like USC and Michigan State spent the same or more for at best equal credentials and more honestly an unproven commodity in Tucker.

You right DBG . He was leaving o u n matter what .

I think it's more around the fact that the Riley departure was discussed a lot more, so OU fans were hearing it daily for weeks/months, whereas, BK's was barely being discussed so not enough chatter to make it sting as much when it became a reality.
