Ahh good one. Exceeds expectations at a historical doormat, parlays adequate success to a higher tier program and.....

You seem like a very progressive thinker.

What about winning 12 at Kansas? Mangiant is still out there.

If you're doing this because you want Napier, this all makes sense. Otherwise, no.

A regular line on this board is that Lincoln Riley wouldn't be an impressive hire. The 53-9 record isn't impressive because he beats up on a weak Big 12 and then sharts himself in the playoff.

regular?

Come on. Anyone bashing Riley is in the minority.

You don't need to go there to make your point on Campbell. These coaching searches are a complete crap shoot. Who had Herman and Mullen failing in year 4?

I think the better argument against Campbell is that his type of program and coaching work with the type of kids who end up at Iowa State.

Matt Campbell wasn’t a career OC. Smart people gave him a shot to be a head coach at 31 and ta power 5 gave him a shot at 35.

He won at both places. Turned them both around.. in his 30s.

You’ve got not one other candidate that can say they have done that.

No. Intelligent see beyond numbers. It is like USL idiots claiming Napier is a great recruiter since he has signed the number 1 recruiting class in the Sun Belt 3 years in a row yet has a -2 point differential versus teams that are a combined 23-36 where only one of them is at .500 group of 5, 1 P-5 and one FCS (who surprisingly has a winning record).

That is 5 of the wins this season and the 1 loss.

what a stupid comment, he's won more at Iowa State than pretty much anyone has won there. That doesn't automatically translate into dominance at a better school of course but its all relative

I'm an Aranda man. Year 2 he's going to exceed Campbells greatest season ever (which also included a blowout loss to Napier)

Stay away from Matt Mullen

Nick Saban at Michigan State
6-5-1
6-6
7-5
6-6

Saban's record didn't light the world on fire. Finding coaches that overachieve is a good sign of probable success. Campbell fits the bill, and he feels a bit like the Jay Johnson hire. We'll see soon enough.

You want to claim LSU is a top 5 job because it has every resource needed to win, but then you want to hold it against a guy that he hasn't won big at a place that doesn't have those resources.

Make up your mind. Do you want a coach, or a name.

But Matt Campbell seems to be seen as an acceptable hire with a near .500 record in that same Big 12 Riley plays in.

If Campbell is competitive its "dude look what he's done at Iowa State!" If his team falls flat on their face from pre-season top 10 to 6-6 or 7-5 like they did just this year, it's "dude it's Iowa State. That he had them in the top 10 to begin with speaks volumes." So he's got a built in excuse for his coaching failure.

2016 3-9
2017 8-5
2018 8-5
2019 7-6
2020 9-3
2021 6-5

41-33 (30-23)

Meeeeehhhhhh. I understand Iowa States history and what they are. But a coach who can make them a 7-5 bowl team doesn't sparkle as a gem of a coach.

With your rationale we would've never hired Saban.

His winning percentage at Michigan St was 58%, Campbell's is 55% at Iowa St.

He made Riley shite in his pants this past Saturday. He has actually been a bit of a thorn in OU's side. Always seems to place them close, and has beaten them at least once. And that was at....

So he's just picking up after what Rhule built then. The fact is, Baylor is 10 times easier to recruit to and win at than Iowa State. When Campbell leaves there, the Cyclones will be back in the toilet for decades.

Conference records at Iowa State:

Matt Campbell 30-23
The guy before him 16-45
Before that guy 2-14
Before that 27-68

To do that in his late 30's is very impressive.
