Certainly a risk, but I think he has the personality to connect with young players. He's also a guy that is probably going to do things "the right way".

It seems like ASU was dead seat on hiring a black coach. I remember their initial list of potential coaches included Teryl Austin, Pep Hamilton, Kevin Sumlin, Charlie Strong. Maybe everyone else turned them down and Edwards was the only black coach willing to take the job. I don't know why you would limit yourself in your search, but it seems like that's what ASU did.

In any event, I think Edwards will create a good culture out there. It's just a matter of if he can get enough good players to show up. It's not like ASU is some national power. They can afford to take a risk and hope this works out well.

With his connections to the NFL, he may be able to pull in good assistant coaches who aspire to exploit the connections to get to the next level. Also he's known to be good man and is well respected.

May need to manage the team as a CEO and personnel guy and leave the strategy and Xs and Os to the coordinators. Sometimes that works, but sometimes it creates some chaos with "too many cooks in the kitchen" type problems.

Well, he's more rah rah than anything else, but the same was thought of Pete Carroll at one point too.

I think the ASU fans will like him as long as he keeps them bowl eligible and beats Arizona every year.

Because they get some increased feelings of self-worth by buttressing their ecred.

Nobody knows how it will end up. It is damn sure not a terrible hire. He is a good person, strict disciplinarian, and has resources to reach back to former NFL players and coaches to fill spots on the staff.

Everyone will just have to wait and see, but it may turn out real well.

I've always like the guy. A bit gruff, but you knows where he stands.

ETA: You are not going to have any of the scandals that plagued several other schools under Herm. He is a happily married man with 2 young daughters who are by all accounts sad to be leaving Monterrey California for the Tempe area.

Dude hasn't coached since 2008, has no CFB in like 20 years, and is keeping the entire staff in check... what is not to like?

Is he well respected? I think he's thought of more as a clown. You really think urban kids from South Central or San Diego are going to respond to the Rev Herm Power Hour? Or tune him right out? And it's easy to issue tough talking platitudes while yukking it up with Suzy Kolber or Trey Wingo on some panel show. Let's see how stern he is when he's scrambling for bowl eligibility and his star DE or RB gets arrested for DUI.

The scariest part of all of this as an ASU grad, is that there is, seemingly, no other fricking candidates?

How the frick can this be?

I'm shocked they didn't go after Norvell.

He and Sumlin made the most sense
