Joe Alleva sabotaged Les Miles when he ran off Chavis and essentially let everyone in on the little secret that he didn't like Miles and wanted him gone.
Well Les had his skeletons in the closet himself.

not sure, but what was Texas' records the 3-4 years prior to Strong coming on board? if they were around 5-7 and 6-7, well hell, maybe they need to give him time.
The coach LSU hires will be coming into a partiall\almost fully loaded roster, AND, the worst season of 8-5 several years back, while 9-10 win seasons have been the norm.
Just a tad bit of difference don't you think?

quote:i have no problems with him wanting to fire Les. If that's the case, just fire him. In no way should your athletic director purposefully make changes to assistant coaches salaries because he hopes to fire the head coach in the future. You don't sabotage a coach. You support him, win or lose. And then you fire him if he doesn't meet expectations.
Well Les had his skeletons in the closet himself.
Joe Alleva set a bad precedent that any new coach will recognize and have to consider prior to accepting the job.

Texas wanting to fire Charlie Strong is so short-sided. They fired Mack Brown and the best they could do was Strong. And, he has had to turn a dumpster fire around and needs time to do it. Judging him at this point is a pretty big mistake. Especially when he's been recruiting lights out.
Pete Carroll took over a USC program that was 31-29 in the five seasons prior to his arrival.
Within two seasons, the Trojans finished 11-2 and fourth in the final polls. Within three seasons, they were AP national champions. And within four seasons, they were consensus national champions.
The point is that major programs shouldn't have to wait 4-5 years to expect some significant turnaround. The right coach can easily pull it off within three seasons.
In fact, the majority of recent national championship-winning coaches have achieved a title within their first three years of arriving at a new program (e.g. Tressel, Saban, Meyer twice, Chizik, Carroll, Miles, etc.).
I have no problem with Texas fans becoming impatient. A program of their resources and pedigree should not be content with mediocrity.
Strong is currently 13-16 overall and 9-10 in the Big 12. His defense looks putrid so far and Texas has not even faced the meat of their schedule (although I will admit that their non-conference slate has been fairly daunting). How long do fans have to wait for success?

quote:There are definitely differences. But what if you hire a new coach who comes in and sees a bunch of players who've been babied by Les Miles and expected to be handed playing time without earning it? and what if those players don't buy in to the new coach? You know what happens???

- some of those guys will leave.
- some of those guys will tank because they don't like the new coach.
- the new coach will have adversity because of the change of team culture he is trying to install.
If you fire a guy and bring in someone new, shouldn't you give him time to install that new culture and see if it works or not? what's the point in undermining him and trying to fire him 2 years in? why hire him in the first place? why fire your old coach?

hashtag, do you know that J.Alleva was the A.D. at Duke & he is the one who fired the lacrosse coach & kicked a lot of the players out of school. Before having to recant & eat serious crow when the truth came out? He's not known to have much/if any balls, period. He bowed to pressure at Duke & he reacts the same way now at LSU.

Exactly, all i see on here and hear on the radio is how this is LSU, we deserve a winner ect... You dont think ppl in Texas feel the same way about the Horns??

Under other circumstances, Strong would likely be given a 4th year. However, with things as they are, if you think Texas is going to just let LSU take Herman, you're sadly mistaken.

Exactly. You bet your sweet arse that if I was a Texas fan that I would operate with a sense of entitlement.

Except LSU has a good defense and a great D coordinator.
Texas has neither.
Texas has neither.

It was Texas' and Brown's arrogance that started hurting them in recruiting. Commits couldn't visit other schools and their "take it or leave it" offers starting losing kids. QB also became a problem after McCoy.

IMO, that changes things. Texas has a losing record because they pulled the plug on a coach who was actually winning there. It caused some issues in their program, some disagreements between boosters, fans, etc. It has caused major issues with boosters and fans supporting the new coach.
In short, Texas put Charlie Strong in a position to fail due to:
1. how they ran off Mack Brown.
2. the terrible hiring issue.
3. hiring a black coach knowing that all the boosters wouldn't be on board.
4. not supporting his way 100%.
I'm not saying it is right. But Charlie Strong's way is going to take longer than normal because he ran off players that he thought were "problems". This alone set them back 2 years. Let him finish the job. If you weren't willing to let him do it "his way", why did you hire him?
More important to me: I don't want LSU to make the same mistakes.

Can we all agree that a new coach at LSU should be given 4 full years before we decide to run him off because he couldn't beat Saban?
I'd agree with you, but if we are in the same boat as Texas, hiring a coach that is known for one specific thing (defense) and his defense is giving up 48 pts a game in his 3rd year then it's time to move on. Now, take into consideration that LSU's roster is simply loaded with NFL talent at every position and no, there is no time for a learning curve. Whoever LSU hires needs to come in a win from the beginning. There is no excuse. Our fans need to quit making excuses.

coaches get stale and unenthusiastic. at the salaries they make these days that is unacceptable. I don't know why more fans don't understand this. yeah, the old champ can still win 9-10 games a year, and he's happy doing just that. no competitive fire anymore.
that's why you let them go.
btw, the blazing saddles was a plus!

quote:There are a lot more factors that can be legitimate issues and not just excuses. Coaches recruit players that fit the style of play they want to play. Coaches recruit players that fit into the attitude and expectations of the coaches.
no, there is no time for a learning curve. Whoever LSU hires needs to come in a win from the beginning. There is no excuse. Our fans need to quit making excuses.
If you change head coaches to someone else with a different style of play (what many expect LSU to do) or because of the attitude of the players/coaches (what Texas did) it complicates things. Then, you add a fanbase and boosters who don't like the head coach from Day 1 and it is even more difficult.
If Texas didn't to support Charlie Strong they shouldn't have hired him. If they didn't want him to come in and get rid of the complacency of the players, they shouldn't have hired him. If they didn't want him to come in and get better players than Mack Brown, and then not wait for those players to get some experience and develop, they shouldn't have hired him. Those aren't excuses. Those are facts.
Same thing goes with LSU. Everyone wants us to have a more open offense. If we hire someone that wants to come in and run the spread, it's going to take time. We are going to have to recruit different types of players on offense. Different style OL and QBs and WRs, etc. You might have players leave when they don't buy in to the new coach. They loved Miles and might not like the new guy.
And the reason for this post: If the LSU fanbase and boosters don't buy in 100% and give this new coach all the support in the world, he's gonna fail. Charlie Strong didn't fail because he's a bad coach. He has failed because Texas never wanted him in the first place.

There are going to be a lot of ignorant posts in this thread, but I agree. Texas is actually hurting themselves even more by even thinking about it. Strong was basically given a bare cupboard with absolutely no QB and a team full of problems, asked to change the culture of the Texas program, and rebuild the recruiting base, AND win lots of games.
The next guy might even have more issues if the fire Strong now. I honestly do NOT think Texas will. If they do, they might as well plan on 3 more years of mediocre football.
Strong has a true freshman QB playing really well, and if he gets the defense going, he'll be in a good position to play well.
