Who were some of the other candidates to replace Dinardo when Saban was hired?

I'll tell you who he was... He was the guy DiNardo beat in his first season at LSU in the Indy Bowl. LSU's first bowl appearance in 6 years.

The ones I remember most are Dennis Erickson and an Arnsparger/Rich Rodriguez combo where presumably Arnsparger would head the program for a couple of years then Rich Rod would take over. Not sure where that one came from.

The Illinois coach at the time was a hot name. Saban was considered 3rd or 4th on the list. Emmert told Joe Dean, "Hire Saban. Don't negotiate, just hire him".

It was around Christmas when they hired Saban. They dubbed it, "St. Nick has come to town" I remember saying, "who is this guy and what has he done at MSU to get hired here?" Boy, was I am idiot back then.

Saban was a 34-24-1 (.585 winning percentage) coach with zero conference titles in five years at the time of his hire by LSU. Here are some coaches with a similar resume to Saban in the last five years.
1. Pat Fitzgerald 31-23 (.575 winning percentage from 2012-Present)
2. Frank Solich 32-23 (.582 winning percentage from 2012-Present)
3. Rick Stockstill 32-22 (.593 winning percentage from 2012-Present)
4. Dana Holgorsen 39-28 (.582 winning percentage from 2011-Present)

No, he was passed over in the latter mid 80's when the idiot BOS hired Archer. Shanahan was also in the mix at the time and they passed over him.

Would not be surprised if Glen Mason recommended LSU hire Saban. He recommended Kent St. hire Saban as his replacement when he left there. (Kent St. didn't listen).

Good memory, I was coming to post this.
Funny story about the Saban hire, buddy of mine worked at the Tiger Weekly, he called me the morning of the Saban introductory press conference and was able to sneak me into the presser. You can actually see my head in some press photos of the event that have appeared in books.

I just remember LSU making Saban the highest paid CFB coach at the time... For a measly $1.2 million per year..... Crazy to think how HC pay has risen so drastically since 1999
