Gruden won some concessions after the LSU offer, which helped pave the way for the successful 2000 and 2001 seasons.

Supposedly he wanted the job in 86 when Arnsparger left and may have been interviewed. IMO, this is mostly and urban legend that has lived on thanks to 20/20 hindsight. At that point in time Spurrier's experience consisted of being OC at Duke and HC of the Tampa Bay Bandits in the USFL. He got the Duke job that year and of course eventually went to Florida.
