When we hired DiNardo in 94, his annual package was worth $585,000.00

That included base pay of $150,000, plus $300,000 in TV/Radio appearances and $135,000 a year in endorsements.

$585,000.00 would equate to $1,082,802.63 in today's money.

When he was termed, LSU only had to pay him his base pay for the remaining years, which was $600,000 ($150,000-a-year for the four years left on his contract.)

In my life time (born early 80s) Power 5 coaches' salaries have increased by 957%, adjusted for inflation.

No doubt our new coach's salary will break another record.

Has any other industry seen that kind of increase since the 80s?

We can thank ESPN and the world wide web for the modern day value of athletics.

The other part of that equation is that athletic departments have multiplied their income exponentially as well through TV contracts. I don’t have the motivation to do the research but I think a better metric would be the percentage of the athletic budget the head football coach’s salary represents. And yes, I do understand that most of a coach’s salary is paid by donations via the ancillary booster club. But it still would be a more representative figure I think.

As I recall LSU tried to hire Pat Sullivan in 95 but balked at a relatively low buyout clause in his contract with TCU. I think the buyout was only about $60,000.

In total, I'm pretty sure Orgeron made more than Miles in half the time. Orgeron will have made somewhere b/t $40-50 million for 5+ years. We might have paid Saban in the $8-9 million range for his five seasons.

Having more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV is nice.

Saban’s gonna be making $16M a year for five years at LSU with the following incentive package:

$3.50M for a natty
$750,000 for SEC title
$2M for every year he doesn’t hit it and quit it again

Edit: we all joke about it but I do believe Woodward is checking with Saban to see if he would be interested. This is going to be Woodward’s legacy - he’s swinging for the fences here and what better way to come out of this than by buying the GOAT back and making him retire a Tiger after retiring the Tigers for so many years? No doubt in my mind he’s at least going to try or has already. Nobody ever thinks they’re going to win the Powerball either but we all buy a ticket.
