I can't disagree about the back to back season thing though, though I'd expect that's more of a coincidence.

For those saying Aranda + Grimes: does recruiting not concern you guys?

It is THE ? with that tandem.

Hence the Herman plug in the OP. Herman is an excellent recruiter despite all the weirdness.

Aranda with a legit OC.

why do people say this??? HE has a legit OC in Grimes and it shows this year.

are people just expecting him to dump him after one year and huge improvements?

THIS. Dude might have the best OC in the country.

You're not sold on Jimbo or Mel Tucker but you're sold on a guy who has never been a HC in the P5?

Yep... say hello to Lincoln Riley, Dave Aranda and Kirby Smart. They weren't even head coaches when they got got hired. Napier has as good a resume as they did.

I think Napier could be the best candidate of the bunch. He also could be a Curly Hallman too!

1. Petersen - Seems like this deal would have been announced a week ago so he's looking like a long shot but still my top preference.

2. Meyer - Even more unlikely but he's the most sure thing for immediate contention. (But kind of a douchebag on top of everything else.)

3. Riley - Waiting til January seems like a huge risk but that loss may have changed everything. At this point I'm really not sure if he's realistic or not. But he would be a homerun hire nonetheless.

4. Aranda - Seems like the smartest guy in football. He is unproven in a couple of areas but I don't see him as a guy with blindspots. He'll address his own weaknesses and adapt to a changing game as well or better than anyone. And I'm near 100% certain that he'll accept so there's no point in continuing the list.

Herman is far from an “excellent” recruiter.

I’d roll the dice on Napier with an easy out clause after year 3

That has nothing to do with being “sold” on Napier and not sold on proven P5 coaches.

Don't at all think Fickell would take the job so unranked.

Zero is a proven P5 HC with a record at LSU nearly like the one Saban had. I am clearly not sold on him either.

There is a reason schools like Tenn, AU, Miss St and SC were interested in Napier. I am sure they also had P5 HC candidates too. I think Napier has a very high ceiling but also has some risk based on his HC experience. I would rather get a rising star over a retread. That is why Riley, Napier and Aranda are my favorites for the job.

Kiffin
Probably goes 10-2 in his first "real" year at Ole Miss. Took Corral from the bench to a Heisman candidate, defense has improved and getting better as the season goes along. Very good recruiter, experienced in the SEC.

People talk about what Riley could do with LSU'S talent and the defensive recruits he could get in Louisiana. Kiffin can do the same. Unlike Riley, Kiffin apparently wants the job.
