Napier won a LOT of close games at ULL, and I questioned if that would translate to the SEC.
It didn't.

Good coach that understands how to motivate players and get the most of the talent on the field.

There are apparently prominent people who are related to Tulane that would be very upset if LSU took Tulane's good coach. Those people could make life hard for Jeff Landry if he spearheaded the move. Therefore, I believe good old Louisiana politics will prevent Sumrall from being a candidate for LSU.

That said, I think Stoops gets the boot at Kentucky and Sumrall goes back to coach his alma mater.

This is what I like the most. But it might be an out of proportion reaction to Kelly's (and Les'), absolute refusal to do this.

Listen to what Coach Sumrall says after a loss. That shows you what he's made of. This guy is like Joe Pesci in Casino. He'll keep coming.

I loved his short time at Troy. That 2022 season was special. Outside of a dumb decision to end the App State game, Troy could have ended up 13-1. I think we were up 4 with the ball with under a minute left. For some reason, Troy takes a safety intentionally and kicks off, giving App State 2 points, meaning a FG wins it. They beat us with a walkoff TD pass so it didn't really matter, but a good punt would have killed a few more seconds.

Some of us like him. I wouldn't be upset if LSU hired him.

I'd rather go with Tim Polasek.

consensus I don't think I have seen consensus on anything on here and I have been here 20 years.

ell me the parallels between he and Napier other than coaching in Louisiana. That’s a lazy, dumb take

quote:

He has less high-level P5 experience than Napier did: one season as a co-coordinator at Kentucky. In addition, Napier at least had served under championship caliber coaches in Dabo and Saban; the biggest name Sumrall has coached under is Mark Stoops. He has four seasons of experience as a head coach in second tier conferences; Napier also had four seasons of experience as a head coach in a second-tier conference. Nobody can point to specific abilities that he would bring to or experiences that he would leverage at a high-level job. Just like Napier it's all personal characteristics. It's not "this guy is an elite defensive coach who won a national championship as one of the best coordinators in the country." Instead it's "he's young," "he's hungry," "he runs a tight ship," "listen to the way he talks," etc. People will compare him to Jim Tressel or Urban Meyer or Dabo Swinney in terms of his lack of experience but those aren't great matches in terms of circumstances and career arcs. Tressel had a 15 year run of success at a non-P5 school, not 4. Meyer was considered an offensive whiz on the cutting edge of innovation with his implementation of the spread. Clemson in 2009 in the ACC is not LSU in 2025 in the SEC. Sumrall would be a massive risk for LSU.

Now it’s your turn. Tell us how he is different and better than Napier or is your take just a lazy and dumb one?

LSU doesn’t concern itself with Tulane. Same with ULL.

I totally agree. And I’m UL alum. Football at Tulane or Troy is not really the same game as football at LSU.

Next.

Did Napier ever take over a program that was in worse shape than LSU when O was fired? No, but Sumrall did.

Sumrall is a defensive guy

Napier's downfall is he refused to give up playcalling

Actually, he’s even less qualified than Napier. He took over the house that Willie Fritz built

You say this like Tulane is some sustainable power.

After Tulane went 12-0 in 1998 and Tommy Bowden left, they went 3-8, 6-5, 3-9 the next 3 years

Tulane is a shite football program with a fanbase that does not and will not care and he truly sustained it

I am not pro or anti Sumrall, but he’s a fricking football coach and deserves consideration

That’s it? That’s the big difference between he and Napier that qualifies him? Well then despite all of the other massive concerns pointed out above he’s our man!

And Troy had won like five games in three years before he won back to back conference championships. He’s probably not ready for an LSU level job right now. Good chance he’s going to be a very good coach for a big program soon.
