Not including LSU, since that situation has been discussed over and over and over again already.

Also, we realize that the answer to this question cannot be accurately determined for at least a few years, after these new hires have gone through a few seasons.

Who most "outkicked their coverage"? Florida Atlantic

Baylor, imo.

Not that he was the best coach, but they killed it with that hire considering their situation.

All coaching hires are risks. I say Purdue got the best guy.

Texas. Not even close.

ETA:

LSU fans mad at Herman for playing them.

Oregon, Purdue, or Texas. FAU definitely outkicked their coverage.

Notice that no one is saying LSU

FAU is the only school you can really say knocked it out of the park. Both Hermann and Taggert are unproven commodities in the power 5. Outkicking their coverage would have been pulling a coach from another power 5 school they have no business getting. Texas was Hermann's dream school and Taggert wasn't telling Oregon no.

Notice that the OP excluded LSU from consideration as we have discussed that hire once or twice on this board.
