VolQuest's Hot Board 2.0 for VOLS coaching search

1. Jon Gruden *** UPDATE 11/14 — Gruden remains the most popular name in Tennessee’s coaching search. There’s been contact between the two parties, but everyone behind the scenes insists that Gruden is a pure fantasy to become the Vols’ next coach. Still, Gruden has reached out to several coaches about reuniting in the near future. However, those names do not include former Vols Tee Martin, John Chavis, Terry Fair or Jay Graham. On Mike and Mike today, Gruden said he hadn’t talked to anybody at Tennessee but closed his statement saying, “As you know in life, never say never to nothing.” ***
2. Dan Mullen *** UPDATE 11/14 — Mullen has been contacted by Tennessee, but talks remain in the infancy stages. There’s conflicting information about Mullen’s interest in leaving Starkville. Some say it’s a done deal — that he’s headed to Tennessee, Texas A&M, etc. — while others on the ground adamantly believe he isn’t looking to jump. ***
3. Scott Frost *** UPDATE 11/14 — Frost would be a big hire for Tennessee, but multiple sources from various camps say that Frost is booked for a return to his alma mater. ***
4. Mike Norvell *** UPDATE 11/14 — Norvell has real interest in the Tennessee opening. The Vols have made contact with Norvell’s people. Ole Miss and Arkansas could be options, too, but Tennessee remains the premiere opportunity. As an aside, Norvell’s coaching odds have surged in the last 24 hours, with the Memphis coach now only behind Gruden as the favorite for Tennessee's opening. ***
5. Chad Morris *** UPDATE 11/14 — Morris is a name we’ve heard several times. He’s not one of Tennessee’s top targets currently but if several big fish say no? ***
6. Jeff Brohm
7. Willie Taggart *** UPDATE 11/14 — Taggart has expressed interest in the Tennessee job and would listen if approached. He’s mulling a return to the South and Tennessee could be his best opportunity should the Vols coming calling.***
Others to watch:
Jimbo Fisher
DJ Durkin
Doug Marrone
Justin Fuente
Tee Martin
Mike Leach

I'm surprised more schools aren't looking at him. I mean, yeah he is quirky as hell, but he has proven to be able to coach at some less than average power 5 schools. Hell, I'd rather have Leach, who has been involved with the college game practically his whole career, than Gruden, who hasn't been.

Jon Gruden is the worst hire of all the names on that last...

frick that entire list outside of Gruden, Frost, Marrone, and Mullen.
If Currie is greenlit to spend $7-8 Million on a HC as has been reported, this list is booty cheeks.
Can't believe people spend 9.95 a month for this shite.

Lol at Brohm leaving Purdue.
Have you taken an introspective look at your program lately? Why would a coach leave a school where there are basically 0 expectations and plenty of runway to build a team vs. fans likely wanting him canned in year 3 when he doesn't win the SECCG.

Probably, would entirely depend on the staff he brought in. He'd have to be a CEO type coach, like Dabo. He'd get the recruits, he'd be a hell of a motivator, but he'd need to be able to trust his staff to develop players.
As far as x's and o's, no worries there, he knows more about the game than all of us combined.
Right staff, could be a juggernaut.
Wrong staff or an unwillingness to be the CEO instead of a micromanager, it would be a disaster of epic proportions.

I do not want Brohm and neither do 99.9% of VOLS fans. Settle down

either Frost or Mullen would be solid. I'd go with Mullen personally though.

Out of that list I'd have to put my money on Mike Norvell getting the job

Most of those are nogo's, but then everyone knows that already.
Don't see Petrino listed, and he should be #1 target. Also, other posters mentioned the NY Jets guy.

He could do some serious damage there IMO. A true wrecking crew.

My father in law, who I take to Tennessee games, says that Bobby Petrino will be Tennessee's next head coach. It's weird that one of the most prominent boosters at Tennessee would say there's "ZERO CHANCE" , because my father in law is dead certain about this. It's entirely possible that he heard the name Bobby Petrino on the radio and his early stage dementia is causing him to repeat it over and over again.
My grandmother, God rest her soul, had the name "Marco Rubio" stuck in her head during her last few years. Dementia is tough on the family. Prayers sent

John Gruden sounds great in the heads on UT fans but it would be another Dooley type hire. The man hasnt coached in a decade and has never recruited. He lacks the passion and motivation to be the coach UT needs to turn itself back into anything other than a SEC east doormat.

More schools worried about perception than actually winning games. Leach would kill it at a big program.

Anyone who thinks Gruden would be comparable to Dooley should probably stop watching sports.
