Okay hear me out...

Petey was so revered at USC that there was no coach in the nation that could follow him and meet the expectations of the fan base. Not Urban. Not Saban. Nobody. So, the next USC head coach was doomed from the beginning. What can you do? Well, you bring in a complete tool. A douchebag that run his mouth, raise expectations, fail to deliver, and then blame everyone around him. Someone that is sure to alienate the fan base. In fact, the only real skill that you want this placeholder to have is the ability to recruit to keep the cupboards stocked with talent so that the coach which follows can "resurrect" the program. They'll spend the next 2-3 years looking for the next coach at USC while Kiffin runs the program into the ground. Then the next coach will step in and instead of facing comparisons to Petey (which are impossible in USC), he'll be facing comparisons to Kiffin (an insufferable douchebag). The fans will adore him and all the pompous windbags will sing his praises. And the fanbase will be happy for years to come. ...Like I said Brillant!

, Kiffin will be successful at USC because of his father...and the Pac 10 is like ten Mississippi States...so he might go 10-2

Yet for some reason that PAC-10 (mSU's) is more than hoding their own against and beats the SEC more often than noe over the past decade

And the PAC 10 has a dearth of BCS title game wins.

I agree. Lane will fail at USC because he will not live up to Pete's standard -- same situation like Les replacing Saban, Perkins following Bear, 1/2 dozen following Switzer, following Spurrier.........

The Ron Zook/Coach O theory. Hire a good recruiter to fill the cupboards, then hire a coach after 3 years to coach them up.

He can compete for the Rose bowl every year while the big 12 and SEC duke it out. Of course the year that the NCG is at the rose bowl he's gonna have to play in the holiday bowl or something...

I doubt Mike Garrett is this smart or diabolical but I get the feeling that the scenario will play out much the way you describe as a series of unintended consequences

I think Kiffin will have a hard time controlling that program, the boosters and the staff itself. I think the school is preparing for self imposed sanctions that none of the higher level coaches they approached wanted to be a part of.

The current talent level is high enough for them to continue to play at a high level so I doubt you see much of a drop off on the W/L record. The problems will be off the field, attrition, team discipline etc.

I think they will recruit, and they will set up whomever comes in after them. That is where you might see a Jeff Fisher or a JDR pop up on the radar.

There is a reason this dude has to surround himself with good coaches. He can't coach! What have we learned about his coaching abilities the last few years, pretty much nothing. He went 5-15 with the Raiders and 7-6 with the Vols. He loves to point the finger and lay blame to everyone around him. Can you imagine this douche bag growing up. I bet he was as much as a prick as a prick could be.

If brilliance was the fourth or fifth option... I would love to hear what you would have called the Mike Riley or Steve Sarkisian hire.

I didn't say it was because Petey was better than Urban or Saban, but rather that the USC fan base's perception of Petey is so inflated.

I'm not conceding that to the trojans yet. If Bush is declared ineligible due to ongoing investigations they might be left with dick (fitting for the condoms...)
