Can we put to bed the ridiculous notion that the Ensminger offense in 2016 was amazing?

Who said it was?

Oh my God!

Thank you for putting the facts on the table!

This is spot on.

Thanks to all other posters for sitting back and thinking about what this guy is saying.

Better scoring and more ppg the conference was weaker this year

More yards, more points and a tougher conference seems hard to slam

There have been several posters who are hyping Ensminger based on the offense setting records after Miles left last year.

Well they're a bunch of idiots.

I think the supporters have a point - to a degree - in that we had some very high production numbers AND a lot of scoring, something we rarely had, even during the best days of Miles.

Now, you're correct that, relatively speaking, 42 on Mizzou wasn't that impressive and clearly we underperformed against Bama, even compared to more modest opponents they faced.

But, every game/season/team is different - of course. Folks disagree, but the game against Bama was clearly closer in 2017 than the score reflects. Now, either that was all Canada (which refutes the meddling rumors), all Ensminger (which shows improvement) or some limboish hybrid about which we can draw no conclusions.

What I can say, definitively is:

1. The Ensminger hire (should it materialize) is not the disaster the Negas/Sabanistas argue that it will be. Guy is a highly competent coach. This is not like making Porkchop (who we all love, but is not an OC) the OC.

2. The Ensminger hire is definitely NOT what O promised. O isn't a scheme guy, either way - he's done well, post-Ole Miss in an executive role. He's a motivator/recruiter HC and relies heavily on his coordinators.

He promised "the best" - arguably we have the best DC in CFB - the A&M poach attempt verifies at least one of the 2 or 3 best DCs. The fact that he inherited him from Miles should not be held against him. His retaining him is rightfully a feather in his hat. His hire of Canada, however bad it went, on paper met that promise. He tried to get Kiffin (a move I was against). He talked to Sark, who ended up in the NFL. Canada was the only OC Broyles finalist after 2016 - on paper, that's a fair example of "best coordinators."

But, Steve (and I'll admit a fondness for Steve Ensminger - at my first game in Tiger Stadium, Steve was working out with the QBs because he was one. At my most recent Tiger Stadium game, Steve was working out with the QBs - in the same spot - because he was a coach - that' impossible to quantify) - is NOT that. Nowhere in our conference or even in the top division would he be considered a hot property at OC - and this has been true since his last permanent OC gig, 10 years ago, or even earlier. He's a great guy, loyal, solid recruiter and he's also going to be 60 in September.

I'm a Steve Ensminger fan - I appreciate the challenge he had last year and what he (and O were able to do) when they took over. This year, with the Troy debacle, the staff - again to their credit - did a great turnaround job.

LSU does not need to be a disaster worthy of recovery every season. Gilbert or even Freeze would be a great 2 or 3 year stability period at the OC slot when we have the DC, the athletes, the rebuilding lines to make a run at a conference Championship/playoff spot in 2019 or 2020.

Steve Ensminger just isn't that guy, IMHO. He would be stable, but I don't think it would be enough - not get past Bama, Florida, UGA, Auburn, etc.

So let's look at common opponents between those two years

Those aren't common defenses. Two separate seasons

Ensminger offense wasn't any worse than Canadas. Statistically speaking, you have a much better picture of a years aggregate than you do vs individual teams.

Don't need to sing any nursery songs to put Ensminger to bed as new OC

If the conference was weaker, then college football as a whole was weaker. We do have two teams in the CFP and Auburn beat both of those teams during the regular season. This simply does not hold water no matter how far you dig.

Well Miles and Cam Cameron couldn't pull it off all those years, with all that talent and we did all that with Danny Etling, so say what you want about who we played but that's not how football works.

Comparing different teams that played at different stadiums, at different times of the year, is a cluster frick. Different teams match up with others, in different ways, and that depends on what time of the year and where they met as well.

I never understood people who compared teams like this, especially scores. Now if the teams play similarly, at the same time of year, and have similar talent, then you can compare but even then, it's a crap shoot at best.

I could sit here and come up with teams who didn't do as well against those same teams but performed at a high level at other times, against teams, who are better. This could literally go on all day.

If you have watched football long enough, you would know that every team and every week is completely different from the last. You can also bet your house that every year is completely different and very unpredictable from the previous. No matter how good or bad you think you will be, these teams can surprise you.

LSU simply needs to worry about building our depth chart at QB/DL/OL/LB in that order and we will have a shot to beat anyone, no matter who the coaches are. O has proven that he can beat good coaches when all looks lost, that takes skill, and mental toughness.

Our coaches are good enough if LSU has the talent to help each other. If all else fails, if LSU takes care of these areas through recruiting, another coach could take us from zero to hero in a year. All this bitching, complaining, crying, temper tantrums, pitching fits, is all for nothing, as long as the recruiting stays strong.

Our team wasn't very good this year and he went 9-4 while almost beating ND the same team which lost to GA by 1 point, the GA team who is playing in the championship game. O did this without a kicker, depth issues, Etlings arm talent, injuries, Key gone 80% of the year, and apparent problems from his OC.

I think we will be fine when all these issues are minimized, and don't say all were bc of O, lmao. Stfu

and Lsu had a generational talent at RB in Fournette and an almost equal talent in Guice.

Last years offense was not good.

It was not the Ensminger offense in 2016.

That was Cam and Les' offense and Ensminger called plays from it.

Steve has been an offensive coordinator before where he was tasked with installing his own offense. He wasn't very good at it.
