The Franklin file is not much different than our current coach in a much easier conference

He has one division title (that led to a Big Ten title) and his record against Ohio State (1-6), Michigan (3-4) and Michigan State (3-4) is a combined 7-14. His record against ranked and top-10 opponents is abysmal as detailed in this article. In case you don’t want to take the time to read it, he is 2-9 in games against top-10 opponents (likely to be 2-10 after this weekend in Columbus), and both of those wins came in that magical 2016 season.
He is 65-30 overall and 40-25 in Big Ten games, and those numbers speak to a successful — but certainly not elite — coach, especially when you consider his record in big games and his relative lack of hardware. He is 9-7 in his last 16 games, and if Saturday’s Illinois disaster is any indication, Penn State is a threat to get beat in every game left on its schedule.

Yes but since it isn’t the 80s the file on Penn State isn’t close to the file on LSU
Believe it or not, because if LSU, O is going to have a better resume than some very good coaches.

He has not been excellent at PSU. He made his name at Vandy.
Still, couldn't get there with PSU in the B10, he wouldn't get there at LSU in the SEC>

Well, he did go 4-5 last year. Better than us.

It's not going to be Franklin. My guess? Riley, which is a reach but this is Woodward. Then Campbell or Aranda, preferably Aranda.

Imagine a worst case Riley scenario where it turns out he’s actually got a bad combination of stubbornness & horrible defensive philosophy.
We never field a great defense.
We boat race our way through 9-10 win seasons but lose all the big ones. A mirror image of OU.
I would rather that than live through another decade of LSU being good at everything but developing a consistent passing threat under Franklin with the same W-L result.
I actually am handling the past two years of dumpster fire quite well because this is — and I’m being dead serious — less frustrating than watching a HC just competent/lucky enough to keep his job bludgeon you into apathy with the exact same fatal flaw year in and year out.
James Franklin may be the only name out there that I would be outright disappointed with and unable to talk myself into optimism for.
I will die on this hill.

Hasn't PSU had double digit wins the last 4/5 years ?

He is nothing like o. He is disciplined and organized and emotional stable

Penn State could have easily turned into Nebraska or Tennessee the past decade. Franklin changed parts of the identity of the program, kept others intact, and recruited at a level that put them way above where they'd been for at least a decade. It's a worse job than people probably realize, especially compared to LSU.
He is a pretty flawed in-game coach, but his record is very impressive and shows a lot more ability as a program-builder than the current coach.

Yes, I'd say he is disciplined and for the most part, emotionally stable....I've read numerous reports that he is an a**hat though.... His big problem though is that he can't beat OSU, and that's been a big problem for him, not only in games but also on the recruiting trail.

Don’t want Franklin

Penn State has won 11 games in 3 of the last 4 full (non-Covid) seasons, and 9 in the other season.

Polarizing opinions on Aranda, Riley, Napier, Kiffin.
Nobody is high on Franklin — even the people defending him won’t go beyond “he’s solid”.
Are we shooting for 2nd - 3rd place in the west for the next decade? Would rather gamble on someone with a moonshot ceiling than a guy who fields teams with late-stage Les Miles optics.
Also... no idea how this doesn’t come up more often, but he’s at least as large a toolbag as Kiffin. For some inexplicable reason, he has a much better PR narrative running here.
I mean if we’re going to hire another giant a-hole, just put Urban back on the list

Imagine what the Rant would say about hiring a coach with this record.
6–5–1
6–6
7–5
6–6
9–2
0-3 in bowl games.
