The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that AD Gerald Myers has requested permission to speak with Baylor HC Art Briles. The paper also mentions that Tommy Bowden is also a candidate.

Are they passing on Tubbs?

Not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised. I think in the end they'll hire either Briles or promote from within the program.

This is the right hire for all parties involved.

Whoever they can get on the cheap.

If I'm Briles, I don't want the Tech job. It's a death trap. If you go 9-2, you're just living up to Leach, so they are going to demand national titles out of you, and I don't think that's possible in Lubbock. Better to collect better money in Waco and wait for a better gig to open up.
Honestly, if I were a high profile coach, I'd avoid Tech like the plague unless I was in Tuberville's shoes. It's not a good job.

Except he has like a 5-6 million buyout which TT already said in internal emails they can't afford.

Briles has a pretty decent buyout, somewhere on the order of $4M.

Mike Leach maxed out the potential of that program, and now Texas Tech has a inflated sense of how good their program is.
News Flash...Leach made that program. And it will only be downhill from there. This past decade will forever be known as the Golden Age of Texas Tech football. It's a black hole for recruiting, and they're easily #4 at best in the recruiting game in the Texas/Oklahoma area (Texas, OU, and I'd still pul TAMU above Tech)

Rohan gets a point for the LSU boom...

With Phil coming in, this is true.

Aside from money, Briles left Houston b/c 1. his wife didn't like the big city living, and 2. Wanted to be closer to family and ranch near Stephenville.
I think the money would have to be huge...not only cover the buyout but upgrade his income substantially.
I've seen some Tech fans mention that Briles is a Tech alum. He did finish there, but his playing days were at UH so I'd think whatever attachment he has to the school is more from his coaching stint than his diploma.
Personally, I think Ruffin has earned his shot and would be much less of a financial risk.

That's getting to be a tiresome overstatement.

how so?

While it may be said often, I think its a statement that's very hard to disagree with.

Briles is who they want, no doubt. I don't think they can afford the buyout. Briles could hang around Baylor for a few years and watch his stock drop like every other coach that spends too much time in Waco, or he could get out now. I say this doesn't happen.
A&M is other-wordly compared to Texas Tech. Coaching has made this seem untrue the last few years.
Ruffin? What a joke. In the last two years, Fulmer, Mangino and Weiss have all gotten fired. I say the era of the fat-arse coach is over.

I would not be surprised if Texas Tech passed on Tuberville for Art Briles. The powers that be at Texas Tech absolutely love Briles...have for years.
On another note, whats up with the title of the Lubbock paper? Avalanche? Really? The place is flat as Kate Hudson.
