It’s the HC.

I ain’t gonna lie, there was a time when I wanted Herman at LSU. But the more I’ve learned about him, listened to him speak and learn about what he’s about, watch how he manages his program, saw what he and his wife did to Urban, I’m just convinced that this guy doesn’t have what it takes to be a consistently successful P5 head coach. He can’t get out of his own way, and there is no way IMO based on what I’ve seen from him that he’s gonna be able to make the changes to himself and his own personality that would be required for him to have consistent success.

He sincerely believes that he “can’t be outcoached.” That’s a big problem when your head coach believes that, because it inherently prevents him from making the tough internal and personnel changes that need to be made in order to get better.

All coaches go through rough patches, even Saban and Dabo have. TH just doesn’t have the personality to “weather the storm” when those storms arise.

Need to bring him in as a consultant to your chosen coach. He likes to build something and then leave.

Texas is in the exact same shape Alabama was in when Saban took over. It took a control freak like Saban to get BAMA boosters under control. It will take a guy with a strong pedigree to get TEXAS under control too

That Switzer comment wasn't "a long time ago," it was in 2013 (hence, "it is.")

Don't tell me you've fallen for the inflated revenue claims of a certain other team in Texas linked to temporary construction debt service.

Texas has led the country in finances over the past decade. Just think how much money would be rolling in if we won 10 games every year.

But that's opposite of what the Texas boosters want, they want a yes man coach.

Again, saying yes to what? Running a spread offense versus the wishbone? Recruiting white boys from Austin Westlake?

This "booster interference" idea is totally overblown. Do you think Saban called Paul Bryant Jr. and told him to kiss his arse and lick my balls, I'm the boss man now and your daddy is dead?

Agree.

Alabama is the best college football head coaching job.

Hate it, but it is true.

recruits don't give a shite about that...they just want to be on TV every weekend, practice and play in nice facilities, play high profile games and have a chance to go pro. The fact is that Texas doesn't have a huge recruiting advantage that it might have one day enjoyed.

FWIW, some of his investments that were upside-down were taken care of. That was one of the big lures to UT.

Oil rights was the rumor as well.

Would be really hard to turn that down. I've heard Mack Brown has a nice retirement plan in O&G equity as well.

Texas will catch lightning in a bottle every 35-40 years, but otherwise it isn't going to be anything more than a slightly above average program, beating up on who it should and playing about .500 against the rest.

The very article you quoted said that Switzer said this in 1984. When the article was written in 2013, he said, "it was", not "it is".

I have no idea what additionals UT was offering, but I know 100% that a group of Bama boosters took care of his existing debt. It was not a small amount.

Wait, what?

quote:

When Mack Brown was Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator in 1984, he asked head coach Barry Switzer what he thought the best coaching job in the country was. “I said, ‘Texas. The University of Texas is the best coaching job in America,’” Switzer remembered Thursday in an interview with The Oklahoman.

And it wasn't true then, either. Switzer probably had a huge laugh at Brown's expense.

Boy, y'all's reading comprehension is pitiful.

quote:

Barry Switzer has never been shy about expressing himself. So when it comes to the question of the best job in college football, the former Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys head coach responded with his typical bombast.

Texas.

And it's not even close.

Now, y'all get hung up on 1984 and whatever, but he said this in 2013.

It was simply an illustration of how Switzer feels about the Texas job (context clues from my earlier posts would make that clear), so there's no need to get your arse up over your back and launch into reasons why it might not be.

This is solely re: Barry Switzer. Sheesh.

Switzer recommends Art Briles for Texas job

Basically they want a coach that will schmooze them. Give them access to the program, play golf with them, etc like Mack Brown did. Guys like Saban and Meyer hate that crap.

Do you think Saban called Paul Bryant Jr. and told him to kiss his arse and lick my balls, I'm the boss man now and your daddy is dead?

He didn't have to. everybody knew saban was in charge when he stepped on campus. that's my point. UT needs a guy like that. Not a still wet behind the ears young coach that will succumb to all the booster interference.

Bro, he recalled something he said in 1984. You are very clearly reading into it what you want to see. He may still have felt that way by 2013, but him recalling what he told somebody in 1984 means that he's citing conditions from 1984.

Which, as everyone is rightly trying to point out to you, aren't necessarily the same as today.

Chicken nailed it earlier. College players want marquee, nationally televised games, awesome facilities, and NFL exposure. Texas can still provide that, but a lot of schools that couldn't provide that in 1984 can provide it in 2019. Times have changed.

Jesus F. Christ, dudes, stop reading the excerpts and start clicking the links.

F'ing forget about 1984.

quote:

If Mack Brown resigns or is fired as head football coach at Texas, there will be plenty of talented coaches lining up to replace him. And one of the greatest coaches in the history of college football, Barry Switzer, believes it’s still the premier job in the country.

"I've always said that's the best job in the world," Switzer said.

They're still recruiting at a high level. That'll never change. The coaching needs to be better.

One of these things is true:

1. Texas is the best, most coveted job in CFB

2. Texas settled for Charlie Strong and Tom Herman as HC

Their recruiting will never suffer much when anyone they can get to commit gets the UT bump from homers like Bobby Burton.
