Steve Spurrier Jr is wide receivers coach at MSU---could he be OC?

I didn't realize that until reading today. Of course Leach was not happy with the wide receivers most of the year.

I would be surprised if Steve Jr is an OC. He's exclusively worked with WRs, from my recollection, outside a disastrous turn as recruiting coordinator.

This isn't his wheelhouse.

He’s also listed as passing game coordinator, so think he was more involved than just being outside receivers coach

I'll never forget the look on Spurrier's face after his son called what seemed like four straight fade passes into the endzone against Bama in 2009.

Probably find out in the bowl, as I'm pretty sure he is going to call the plays

Don’t leach quarterbacks call their own plays? Pretty sure Leach just sent in formations and the QB called the actual plays. I know that’s how it worked elsewhere when he had upperclassmen QBs but maybe that changed in the last few years.

Leach called the original play, but according to front and coverage Rogers had the authority to check.

I would expect them to either promote Spurrier or hire Seth Littrell.

Definitely was not his philosophy at WSU.

quote:

former Cougars quarterback Connor Halliday: "By the end of my junior year and all through my senior year, I was probably calling 70 percent of the plays. He would give me a formation and then I would call the play. His coaching philosophy is, you’re out there on the field, you can see the way the defense is lined up better than I can. So it’s my job to get you to the best point of believing in yourself and believing in your ability to call the plays. That’s the way he coaches. He does it in a roundabout way sometimes, but it’s his philosophy to get the quarterback to run the entire show."

Pretty sure Spurrier Jr isn’t ready for a coordinator spot

Would be an abject disaster. He's never called plays before and is a 51 year old position coach.

His own father wouldn't let him call plays if that tells you anything. Ask Iowa what the opposite is like.

We have 4 million dollars to blow, there is no reason to hire internally when we can pay top dollar for a ready made offense that loses 2 or 3 starters at most.
