Not saying they should or are looking t any of these people but just some interesting names.

Kris Kocurek: 42, 49ers DL coach, often credited with being one of the main catalysts to turning that defense into what it is. From Texas

Eric Washington: 51, Bills DL coach and former DC for the Panthers. From Shreveport and went to Grambling so he has LA ties.

Ryan Walters: 34, Illinois DC and former Mizzou DC who looks to be a rising star

Clayton White: 43, SCar DC and former W Kentucky DC

Cort Dennison: 32, Louisville co-DC/LB coach

Travis Williams: 37, Auburn LB coach

Derek has been sobbing at his desk all day trying to find some fresh names. So he’s thankful for your new list

shite you joke but I wish somehow he would see it. Ryan Walters would be a fantastic hire and we could take him from Illinois. Travis Williams has never been a DC but I think he would do a great job as well. It’s time to think out of the box a little.

I'll bet when Derek reads this board he feels like we're slandering him and wants to sue.

Cort Dennison would be my favorite on that list (pending interview that is).

Why? I'm not calling you out, I'd love to hear what makes him a good candidate.

Eric Washington is a really good guy and solid coach. Lots of Louisiana connections and South East connections.

Fellas, Derek also needs us to look over their contracts as well to see any speed bumps that may occur. If we aren’t going to do the whole job for him, let’s not do it at all.

a) has experience coaching both the DB and LB position groups

b) was considered a good recruiter; I don't know that much about this but I did see where he was on ACC lists for being top-10 conference recruiter

c) has spent type as an analyst/film breakdown guy. This is something that we refer to as "old school coaches" seem to lack. Watching opponent film for game planning and watching your own film to self-critique are two different things.

d) as far as I'm concerned, if LBs aren't performing well it all falls apart against modern offenses. LBs confuse the OL. LBs allow your DBs to leverage deep. DL is the key to stopping the run, but LBs are the key to not getting gashed repeatedly by spread offenses. And his experience lies in LBs.

e) And this is admittedly "indirect", but schools seem to regularly seek him out. There's something to it if other HC's are flirting with you.

f) he has been a recruiting coordinator. While we wouldn't need him for that, it's always valuable to have someone with that experience. Especially when it comes to evaluations and prioritizing targets.

g) Working for Bryan Brown has it's own value. He is regarded as "innovative"; hoping some of that rubs off.

h) At Louisville and Oregon they faced "modern offenses" constantly. We're not looking for "experience"; we're looking for "quality experience". And "quality experience" is, partially, defined as experience against the offenses we face nowadays.

Kind of like the Ryan Walters angle. He should get an interview

Dennison is supposed to be an excellent recruiter. My pick would be Ryan Walters though because he’s had success calling a defense for several years now in the SEC and is still young and energetic. He’s making $900K I believe at Illinois so offer him a $600K raise and you still get a good DC on a reasonable $1.5 mil deal compared to the $2.3 mil per you payed Pelini.

Surprised Bryan Smith isn’t mentioned more. He coached secondaries under Harbaugh at UM when they had great defenses every year, then became the DC at Rice and has done a good job for them. Young, known as a good recruiter, has play calling experience but not established enough to have a big buyout. Seems like he checks a lot of boxes.

I wonder how many interviews actually take place. I know at my job we interview at least 15 students to fill 2-3 internship positions.

It seems like a great opportunity to build relationships with unknown or rising talent who may not get the job now but could fill roles down the road.

Seems like we load up and go after one guy at a time. All in on Marcus Freeman, interview Arnett for optics, then all in on Nielsen.
