More like 5-6 years ago.

G5 coaches tend to go to bad schools who are desperate for something new. That is what Napier is trying to avoid by holding out for the right job.

Nap would be a good fit and cheap

Mel Tucker has MSU in the top 5- he’s not worthy
Napier has ULL ranked- make him the HC!!
Wonder how y’all would feel if the coaches switched placed

I agree LSU is top program, deserving of a top tier coach. The crux of the matter is there are top tier coaches who LSU may want, and they may like LSU, but may not be the right timing for it all to come together. This may mean we end up with a second or third choice, not that it's bad, but not the "best choice". In the end, we won't know how successful this hire it, till years down the road. Either way I still like Napier and would consider him above many names I hear mentioned on the CC board.

He was offered the auburn job last year and turned it down. His next job is a tier 1 program be it LSU or elsewhere.

What were you watching 10-15 years ago?

Everything is relative. Obviously if ULL played LSU’s schedule they probably beat McNeese and that’s it. But, relative to their size and resources (107th vs LSU being 9th per wsj) it damn impressive.
Think about that, a school ranked 107th nationally in revenue has cracked the top 25. That alone is a testament to the job Napier has done. Getting their consistently? Absolutely a ridiculous accomplishment at a school like UL.

Depends on who you talk to

He has to get the offer first.
Haven’t seen much chatter about him and usc for instance

Mel Tucker never did anything until he managed to hit gold in the transfer portal . Kinda like … O .

I think you give Napier the contract . Don’t have to pay crazy money . Say 3 yr contract . He does “ check all the boxes . “ Now , I don’t know the guy …
can he bring in great guys with innovative stuff without feeling threatened ? Probably YES . Not like Orgeron .

Napier worries me because we've seen G5 coaches continually crash and burn when they get the larger jobs.
Don't let facts get in the way of your argument.

They fail much more than they succeed.
This is true for most coaches regardless of their previous job. But let's take a look at the AP Top 10 right now and see where their head coaches came from. Spoiler alert... FOUR are from the G5.
1 Kirby Smart - DC coordinator hired as a HC
2 Luke Fickell - Currently G5 HC
3 Saban - HC from Big10, SEC, and NFL
4 Licon Riley - OC promoted to head coach
5 Mel Tucker - NFL DC, P5 HC
6 Ryan Day - Co-OC prior to being promoted to HC
7 Mario Cristobal - HC from G5 team
8 Brian Kelly - HC from G5 team
9 Jim Harbaugh - HC from Pac10 and NFL
10 Dave Clawson - HC from G5 Team
Saban, Harbaugh, Tucker - previous P5 coaches & NFL (not HC for Tucker)
Fickell, Cristobal, Kelly, Clawson - currently or formerly from the G5
Smart, Riley, Day - coordinators hired to be HC's at major programs.

Yeah, I understand what OP is getting at, and as a Cajuns fan, I’m loving it and surprised as hell also, but that was an ignorant statement.
Now…had OP said they were the worst FBS program 20 years ago, when Baldwin was head coach, I’d probably agree.

Napier does not fit any of these and in fact you could argue whether or not he has been elite at ULL relative to others who have moved up to a top tier program-typically they make a bcs bowl etc (urban at Utah frost at UCF Kelly at Cincinnati)
Well…the resources available at Utah, UCF and Cincy are double what they are at Louisiana, so consider that as well.
I’m not saying Napier should be at the top of the list for LSU, but when he took over for the Cajuns, Louisiana had an athletic budget that was about mid-tier for THE SUNBELT, and on the very low end of even the G5 spectrum.

At least get close to the truth, OK?
So his time as Ohio St, HC means what?
He was the Assistant HC at Bama before going to Oregon, for Pete's sake.
That's a Catholic thing. Not an endorsement of a good G5 coach.
Dude! He has a losing record in the ACC over 8 years. He is having his only good year to date, ans has N.C. State and Clemson ahead.
