Bob Shoop is one. David Reaves at UAB and Jay Bateman at UNC run 4-2-5 bases. Heacock at Iowa St used to run a 4-3 before changing to a 3-3-3.

The one season he ran their defense while head coaching, they were a top 25 D with Vandy talent playing in the SEC.
Odom wasn’t a successful head coach either, but that has nothing to do with him being a good DC.

Derek Mason is a terrible DC and has clearly less than average intelligence overall. He was completely lost during the coaches telecast of the NCG last year and I felt bad that they put him in with actual smart people because he couldn't follow the conversation and they kept having to explain to him what they were talking about.
