By all means, ask about it. But it should not be a defining factor in any coaching search. It isn't in the hire's best interest so might as well not even bother. No one knows what the future holds, so might as well not even bother.
If he's the right candidate, others will be seeking him. Get used to it. You did good... now either keep him when the time comes or go find the next one. Either way, that's in the future. Not in an interview.

Lukabu is appealing to me. He has a good resume but I will admit most I know is from this board. I think he would be here for a few years even if successful. I like how people have described his demeanor and believe his players would appreciate that approach. Otherwise, I don’t know crap about who would be a good DC I just wish we could close someone out and start teaching!

We don’t. In fact we want someone who is good enough to be ready to move up after one year. Like a 1-and-done in basketball. We’d LOVE to have them 4+ years, but we need someone we can’t expect to stay that long.
