Do you think Napier is a serious candidate at AU? Have you heard anything to sway your opinion one way or another that he might get offered? Grasping at straws here...

But seriously, the more I look into this guy and listen to him in interviews, the more impressed I am with him. Y'all have been blessed to have him as your HC

There hasn't been anything said on our end other than that he's interviewing.

No, I’m sorry. He’s holding out for a good job.

Napier could hold out and get better

Texas
Michigan
LSU
Tennessee

Have a good chance of being open next year.

I feel like we would regret passing on him. I really think he’s destined for greatness. He just seems to have “it”.

Of course I also feel that way about Dave Aranda, who didn’t exactly cover himself in glory his first year at Baylor...but he’s still got time to prove me correct

Aranda never seemed like a HC. I always he would be a DC in the NFL.

Good breakdown on why Napier is patient

It’s a possibility, but his preferred P5 gigs are in a specific region. So I personally think UNC, Tennessee, NC State, and Va Tech are programs that he would be gone in a heartbeat. Especially if they are committed to winning.

South Carolina didn’t give him the impression that they were committed financially to compete with Florida or Georgia so he said no thanks. Plus USC was set on Beamer from the beginning.

Auburn is one of those programs that you can win it all, they are committed to winning, but as long as Saban is at Bama it’s a no win situation. It’s a great HC gig and if offered I think he would be foolish not to take it.

According to Phillip Marshall, Napier has been offered the job. Who knows

While I really do want him with us for one more non-COVID shite season, if Coach Napier is offered the job, he needs to take it.

We'll be in a hurt trying to hire a new head coach, though. I don't think we'll be able to come up with the same pool of money for HC and assistants that we did last go-round.

Can't say no thanks if you're never offered.

There are no sure things when it comes to moving up from G5 to P5. Some of these guys who looked great at the lower level just don’t translate up.

For every hit, there are many more who miss. Sumlin was a rising star at Houston who’s now flamed out twice at the P5 level. Frost is an absolute disaster at Nebraska. Fuente is mediocre and trending down hard at VA Tech and would have just been fired in a normal year. Herman has one year left to turn it around at Texas. Jeff Brohm just had his 3rd losing season in a row at Purdue. Chad Morris was awful as a head coach and also wasn’t a star as an OC this year in the SEC.

Norvell needs to be given time, but he didn’t exactly stand out for making good decisions this year. He didn’t do a good job of looking like he was ready to handle a big program, but he deserves time to fix the mess that is FSU. Of the recent “sure fire guys” moving up from G5 only Kiffin, Matt Ruhle and Row the Boat really cut it, and Fleck is coming off a rough season of his own this year after some success. I included Kiffin, but he’s really a different animal, as his stint in G5 was just career rehab. He’s spent most of his coaching time at the P5 level in some capacity. Rhule is your best example of an instant hit who had a major impact after moving up. A lot of the names in the failure list above would have been considered much better hires when they were signed.

My point isn’t to dump on Napier at all. It’s just to say that no one is sure fire, no matter how good they look. G5 is just a different animal and for every one success, there will be a lot of guys who are mediocre to failures at the highest level. Napier does look like a guy who can make that leap, but that’s still no guarantee, especially in the SEC.

Actually, you can. You can always not really want the job unless outrageous demands are met. Making those demands knowing they won't be met is basically saying, no thanks.

Do you think Sale would be a legitimate candidate to take over? Could mean staff continuity, if nothing else.

My son just signed with UL and I really wanted him to get at least one season under Napier.

Sale would be my guess at this point. He's been Napier's right hand man as they've had 3 coaching stops together now. I imagine Billy would take him to Auburn with him but would Sale stay behind for an opportunity to become a HC of a top 20 team?
