Take what Briles built and keep it going? Briles brought in Keenum and a lot of those speedy WR/RBs. Sumlin does get credit for coaching him/them, but who knows how much of that was Holgerson/Kingsbury? He had a couple great Offenses at OU with Kevin Wilson, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Sherman recruited farily well, he just couldn't coach/lost the team. A&M had a good amount of talent the last few years and Sumlin was left with two top 5 picks on the o-line, good RB/WRs and a few good defensive players(their D shouldn't be this bad).
I ultimately think Sumlin is a good coach, but the verdict is still out on him. His resume, if you dive in to it, has holes and if he stays at A&M the next 3-4 years we'll finally get a chance to see how good of a coach he is.

Sherman recruited terribly on defense. Almost all of the talent he did get on campus graduated this past year (Moore, Porter)
He could build the shite out of an offensive line and had an eye for some diamonds in the rough like Evans and Swope. But he wasn't some top notch recruiter. The vast majority of players we signed under him were 3 stars and we finished in the low 20's or worse in many of the big recruiting rankings. All that has changed drastically under Sumlin.

Yea, that's why I said Sherman was a "fairly good" recruiter, not good-great. Sumlin has definitely been a step up...having the Manziel hype certainly helps(though admittedly he is a good recruiter even without that).
I've heard many people say A&M was trash before Sumlin got there, which just isn't true. They had some good players. Hell even during Sherman's last couple years they were beating a lot of good teams, they just fell apart at the end of games.

Its not a story in LA, all but the most loyal Hadenites at SC want him canned. I'm not quite so hot headed, as there are some mitigating circumstances affecting the program (sanctions are real, and they suck), but here's what's pissing off the fans/alums etc about Haden: He chose passive diplomacy regarding NCAA sanctions. You don't have to be a JD to see USC got hammered worse than anybody else for one guy taking illegal benefits from someone not affiliated with the university. In contrast, look at Donna Shalala's (Miami) aggressive stance against the NCAA. They got a slap on the wrist as a result. Its not coincidence.
Orgeron's ouster was graceless. Part of that is on Coach O, you can't have a USC team unprepared to play ucla and keep your job, but O's departure rustled jimmies. Haden is viewed by many as a dispassionate killjoy with no stones. History may exonorate him as a visionary tactician, but in the short view he's a marked man.

I agree. Sherman was a good coach to bridge the gap between Fran (garbage) and Sumlin (a guy many think can take the program to the next level). Sherman helped repair a lot of the HS bridges burned by Fran. He also left some gaping holes all over on defense
