Evidently Haden had zeroed in on Keven Sumlin and Texas A&M outmaneuvered Haden by signing Sumlin to an extension.

Also sounds like Jack Del Rio didn't interview very well.

quote:

After speaking with Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio in November, USC Athletic Director Pat Haden eventually zeroed in on Texas A&M Coach Kevin Sumlin, the source said, but Haden could not meet with him until after the Aggies’ regular season was complete.

Haden was scheduled to meet with Sumlin on Sunday, a day after USC’s loss to UCLA, but Texas A&M announced Saturday that Sumlin had agreed to a six-year contract extension, the source said.

USC also contacted Boise State’s Chris Petersen, who withdrew from consideration, the source said.

How many times is Petersen going to convey interest and then withdraw? People are just going to stop trying eventually. If he wants to stay at Boise State, then stop putting your name out there and leave it alone. But I guess it's probably his agent....as a fan, I imagine they are getting sick of it.

Smart move by A&M to lock Sumlin up before he could talk to USC

4 wins max this year w/o JFF. We'll see what they say about Sumlin when JFF is gone.

There was mutual interest for sure. Why wouldn't there be? USC is still a great job. I guess Sumlin went for the bird in the hand.

Don't believe the LAT-- Sumlin heavily pitched himself for the job. Heavily.

He withdrew his name because he was a leading candidate, and not the leading candidate. (Which I completely get so as not to jeopardize his current tenure)

Sark hire is not sexy, but we will see how it plays out. A lot of Trojans got their egos hurt because they thought Saban or CUM would run to LA. It sometimes doesn't work that way.

If Sark is the best they can do, wow.

The LA Times article doesn't say Sumlin wasn't interested in the job. It says Haden wanted Sumlin. The two are not mutually exclusive.

That's what I'm thinking. I could be wrong, but I think they made a bad choice. Of course I'm a UCLA fan, so I'm thrilled with this hire.

Sure they may be sick of it but if you give confirmation to a small school that you are a lifer eventually your success will catch up to you and they will can your arse the moment you have one bad year like what Fresno State did to Pat Hill.

Haden did not even interview Sumlin.

Sumlin wanted assurances he was choice #1. Haden would not give him that.

Sumlin walked.

Sark hired.

more like A&M ponied up and USC is now trying to get some spin out to save face.

Mistake by Sumlin IMO, unless this was a pure money grab.

Why not freaking compete in the weakening Pac-12 instead of the SEC pressure cooker? Add to that you have the most fertile recruiting ground pretty much all to yourself (UCLA is not a threat to USC when they have a legit coach).

He's already losing his golden goose this year. His stock will never be higher than it is now. Poorly played on his part, IMO. USC is a once-in-a-lifetime gig.

I didn't want Sumlin or Sark.

Sumlin will start sinking back to mediocrity next year.
