Well, for a school that covered up youth rape for decades….. it couldn’t happen to better program.

If the choices are Hartline, Mullen, or Kelly, who do you take? And do they want to walk into that mess?

I mean, Kelly has actually done that here at LSU, so he could in theory handle it. Would he want to again? Did he leave Notre Dame just to pull programs out of the ditch the rest of his career? And why would Penn State fire a 53 yr old who can't win the big game, and then hire a 64 yr old with the same issue?

Mullen weirded out over at Florida. Seems to have it going again at UNLV, but would you trust him with a big program?

Hartline seems like a hot coordinator, and Penn State would be a nice program to take over. But do you want to come into something this dead, for your first run as HC?

Sad part is in 2-3 years they’ll be demanding the new coach be replaced for not developing talent or winning. This years group would have been your upper classsmen. This mishandling of replacing the coach could have a detrimental effect that lasts a decade. NIL is their only hope. As a regular recruit the shenanigans can’t give much confidence.

I doubt they’re about to poach a sitting head coach for a playoff bound team.

If their coach is a current coordinator, they would have already announced him as the incoming head coach and let him finish coaching the playoffs while still getting a start on recruiting. Happened plenty of times with coordinators of teams in national title contention getting hired as HC elsewhere

In ten years we won’t even track high school class rankings.

I've said it before but will keep saying it. If Penn State wants to become a playoff team in the next decade, they need to move to the ACC. They will have an easier time getting there. But if I had any say after that whole coverup, they would have dropped to a G5.

A natural fit would be that Penn State leave the Big 10, and the old Big East minus Miami leaves the ACC, to form a new Big East football conference. Take Pitt, Boston College, Syracuse, Va Tech. You also pull West Va and Cincinnati out of the Big 12, maybe Rutgers also out of the Big 10. Get a couple more that fit the footprint, say Temple, Army, Navy and East Carolina out of the AAC. If you like, Louisville maybe instead of one of the last 4.

That's 12 schools in a relatively tight area, many with history playing each other, that fanbases could re-develop rivalries with. Penn State as the football power, but reasonable challenges from maybe half the other teams in a given year. Basketball would become solid, you'd have ECU and Louisville with solid baseball, etc. The 2 service academies regionally fit, and would give a marquee national game where records don't matter.
I'd say it would be better than any G5, would lock up a playoff berth in football, and breath some life back into that part of the country as far as fan interest.
It would be better than a G5,

I've heard several advance the theory of a playoff coach in waiting, but why then go so hard for Sitake? For that matter why fire Franklin in October? In any case, waiting for such a hire makes no sense with the current calendar.

Karmic retribution for getting off easy in 2011–12. Fitting that it happened by firing the guy who helped them avoid catastrophe back then.
